final version of the midi only version of performer by motu
not to be confused with digital performer 6 which is a different app entirely for mac os x
this app is for mac os classic from 1997 so was most likely used mostly with beige "Power Macintosh 600" models
up to the beige G3 (released nov 1997) which would have been the most powerful computer of the time.
the imac g3 followed in 1998, and the powermac B+W g3's werent out till 1999!

System Requirements

Performer requires a 68040-based Macintosh or faster with 12Mb of RAM or more and System 7.1 or higher. However, this configuration will not be able to play and record audio under Sound Manager (see below).

Requirements for Sound Manager audio
If you would like to play and record audio tracks in Performer using Sound Manager and your Macintosh built-in sound capabilities, you will need a Power Macintosh with at least 32Mb of RAM running System 7.5 or higher. System 7.6.1 and at least 40Mb of RAM is recommended.

Sound Manager 3.2.1 and another System Extension called SOMobjects are also required for native audio recording and playback, but both of them are included with Digital Performer.

Eight Voices of CD-Quality Audio
Performer 6 lets you record and play up to eight simultaneous channels of 16-bit, 44.1 KHz digital audio through the built-in audio hardware of your Power Macintosh.

Record anything directly into Performer
Imagine being able to record anything, from vocals to guitar, directly into your Mac, perfectly synchronized with your MIDI tracks. Make your MIDI instruments go farther by recording them as audio and then playing the original material with new parts from the same synth. You can use this technique to double existing material or record entirely new parts. The possibilities are endless.

If you know Performer, you know digital audio
Add and record audio tracks the same way as MIDI tracks. You'll be recording and editing audio in no time.

Take advantage of the power of your Power Macintosh
Today's Power Macs are ready to record CD-quality audio. Just connect any audio source - such as a CD player or a microphone - into the audio input and you're ready to go.

Graphic editing of mix automation
Automate your mix directly in Performer and edit it graphically.

Editing is instantaneous and non-destructive
Edit your audio - cut, copy, paste, snip, splice, shift, split, trim - to perfect your mix. Record multiple takes and build composite tracks that consist of the best parts of each take. With non-destructive editing, your original recordings are always preserved. Serif

Use Performer's familiar, powerful editing features
Want to loop some audio? Insert a loop, just like you would in a MIDI track. Use the track's familiar event list or draw the loop graphically as shown here. Audio editing in Performer is so similar to MIDI editing, you'll be using all of Performer's powerful editing features on your audio tracks in no time.

A virtual effects rack at your fingertips

Performer's audio effects processing happens in real time. This means that your original audio is always preserved, and you can turn off the effect in an instant with the Bypass button. No file-based processing here. No sitting around waiting for progress bars. You hear results instantly; you can even tweak settings in real time as you listen to your mix. Performer's real-time effects include reverb, parametric EQ, dynamics processing, echo, flange, chorus, tremolo and AutoPan. Apply them the same way as Performer's MIDI effects (arpeggiator, echo, groove quantize, humanize and others).

Performer 6: the first sequencer to provide MIDI effects plug-ins

Apply MIDI effects plug-ins as permanent edits or as non-destructive real-time processing
While other sequencing products focus entirely on audio features these days, Performer 6 gives you innovative new features for both audio and MIDI. And while audio effects plug-ins are quite the buzz lately, Performer 6 is the first sequencer to offer MIDI effects plug-ins. That's right. Performer 6 let's you apply unique MIDI processing plug-ins to your MIDI tracks. You can apply them permanently to your MIDI data as edit commands in Performer's Region menu, or you can apply them non-destructively in real time as MIDI effects inserts in the Mixing Board window. You can even start with a plug-in on a real-time effect insert, tweak it until you like it, and then apply it permanently. For example, you could apply the arpeggiator effect non-destructively as an insert, tweak the settings exactly the way you want in real time - as the music plays, and then "print" or "capture" the effect as permanent data in the track.
Performer 6 ships with a starter set of MIDI plug-ins, including an arpeggiator, an echo effect, and a plug-in called "Remove Duplicates", which gets rid of duplicate events on the same tick. Others plug-ins include re-incarnations of some of Performer's time-honored Region edits, like Transpose and Shift. But they're better now because you get real-time previewing, the ability to save settings, and other enhancements. Many more MIDI plug-ins are on the way - from MOTU and third-party developers. You'll be able to download them from this web site. Best of all, Performer's MIDI plug-in format is an open architecture, and our developer kit is available to any third party who wants to write plug-ins for Performer. Got programming chops? Contact Mark of the Unicorn if you are interested.

Capturing real-time MIDI effects
The new Capture Real Time MIDI Effects command in the Region menu lets you 'print' any real-time MIDI effects processing that is currently applied to the track via the effects inserts in the Mixing Board window. Performer cuts the original data from the track, runs it through the processing currently applied to the track, and then writes the data back to the track in its processed form. This feature allows you to apply effects to certain portions of a track, instead of the entire track. This feature is also useful when you want to tweak a real-time effect in ways that are not possible with the effect's controls. For example, you might have an arpeggiator effect applied to a track, and you might want to tweak individual note velocities of the notes it is generating. The Capture Real Time MIDI Effects command writes all of the notes permanently to the track so that you can edit them in the usual fashion.

Performer's new Window Sets feature lets you save your favorite window arrangements and recall them instantly with a keystroke - or from the Windows menu. It's almost like duplicating your Macintosh screen as many times as you want. Save as many window sets as you like - there's no limit in Performer. Customize your favorite window layout for recording, mixing, MIDI editing, audio editing, performing live - the possibilities are endless. Include any combination of windows you want in a set - from one window to dozens. Assign window sets to your favorite keystrokes for instant recall. Getting around in Performer has never been faster and easier!

In Performer 6, you can search for anything, anywhere, based on any set of criteria you wish. For example, let's say you have a percussion track with lots of syncopation. But some of the 16th-note offbeats are just too loud. You don't want to velocity-compress the whole track because the rest of the percussion in it sounds fine. Here's where Performer's new Search feature comes to your rescue: just set it up to find all notes played on a 16th-note offbeat with a duration of a 16th note (plus or minus 40 ticks) and a velocity greater than 80 - as shown in this example.

Then just click the Search button. Before you can say Wow!, all such notes instantly appear in the Search Results window. Now you can do whatever you want to them: select them, change them, delete them, scale their velocities - you name it!

The Clippings Window

Have you always wished for a way to store little bits of data - phrases, licks, loops - of both MIDI and/or audio data? You know, kind of like musical clip-art. Well, in Performer 6, your wish has come true: introducing the Clippings window. This window stores anything you want, from a single note to an entire sequence. Just drag and drop anything you want into it. To get it back later, just drag it back into the appropriate window in Performer. It's that simple. But best of all, the Clippings window is not restricted to MIDI or audio data. You can store references to any file or folder on your hard drive, such as a word processing document with lyrics in it. You can store stuff in the Clippings window that is specific to a certain Performer file, or stuff that is always available, no matter what file you have open. Once you try the Clippings window, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it

Dozens of other enhancements
Performer 6 is chock full of other enhancements - things you've been asking for that Version 6 now delivers. Like the enhanced View Filter: it now stays open as a window, so you can leave it on-screen and make changes on the fly. It also offers a separate view filter for event lists, so you can view continuous controllers in other windows without having to wade through them in the event list. You asked for it? you got it! But we didn't stop there: you can now save your favorite View Filter settings and recall them by name from the mini-menu. Here are just a few more examples of the many enhancements you'll find in Performer 6.      view filter

Shift to a specific time
The Shift dialog has always allowed you to move data by a certain amount. Now it also lets you move data to a specific location. Just choose the new 'Shift to time' option and specify the location you want.

Shifting regardless of tempo
In earlier versions of Performer, shifting might not have always produced the results you wanted because the real-time performance of the material was altered due to different tempos at the new location. Now you can have it either way with the new 'Preserve real time performance' option. When this option is turned on, data sounds exactly the same after shifting, regardless of tempos.      Shift Amount Window

Frame click metronome
Performer 6 lets you enter tempos in frame-clicks. Need to set Performer to a 14-4 click? Just type it in to the tempo setting and you're done. Performer calculates the bpm tempo to a very, very high degree of accuracy. There's even a global preference to view tempos in bpm or frame-click tempos.      Frame Click Window

End times are displayed in the event list
Performer 6 displays the end times of notes (and regions of audio) in any time format you like. So now you'll instantly know exactly where the note ends, along with its duration.

Duplicating tracks
Performer 6 lets you duplicate tracks - including the contents of the track and all of its takes, along with its playback destination and other settings.      Duplicate tracks window

Removing duplicate events
Have you ever gotten into a situation where you have several identical events on the same tick - or worse, an entire track full of duplicates? Performer 6 can remove all unnecessary duplicate events in one easy operation.

Printing Real-time MIDI effects
If you've been working with Performer's real time MIDI effects, such as the arpeggiator or echo effects, you've probably wished that you could 'print' the effect to the track - make it permanent, in other words, especially when exporting the sequence as a MIDI file. The new Print real-time MIDI Effects command in the Region menu does it in one easy step.

Performer or Digital Performer?

Now that Performer has audio capabilities, a lot of people are wondering what the difference is between Performer and Digital Performer.

One major distinction between Performer and Digital Performer is that Digital Performer supports audio cards from Korg and Digidesign as well as MOTU's own 2408. Digital Performer can also serve as a versatile front end to ProTools hardware - including access to TDM plug-ins.

Digital Performer also supplies premium MAS audio plug-ins like eVerb, PreAmp-1 and others.

Digital Performer includes a feature that allows you to record your mixes internally. This is called 'bounce to disc' This feature makes it a simple matter to then burn your finished mix onto a CD-R.

Digital Performer also provides a complete TDM-style mixing environment complete with busses and auxes.

While Performer provides 8 tracks of audio, Digital Performer gives you as many tracks as your computer can handle.
