USB support on Win95
« on: July 08, 2015, 10:04:29 AM »
(Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but I've had a good look without seeing it.)

Anyone eccentric enough to try setting up a Win95 DAW will sooner or later run into the less-than-ideal USB implementation for this OS. There were various updates & fixes, and even then some devices need their own driver in order to work. My midi controller keyboard (an Evolution MK249c) didn't come with 95 drivers, disdaining it in the documentation, so all I really wanted was the ability to use my memory sticks to transfer files. (CDRWs didn't seem so bad back then but they take an age in comparison.)
I eventually turned up this universal driver http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/172402-xusbsupp-extended-usb-supplement-for-windows-95-osr2/ which works like a charm. It's definitely worth reading the page properly before installing it.

Be warned this driver only works for mass storage devices, nothing else, but hopefully someone else will find it as useful as I did. (My Midi keyboard-workaround is using the USB for power and a midi cable connected to my Creative game port for data. The Win98 midi driver seems to have been accepted by 95, so it all functions as it should.)

Yeah...The old 1.1 USB speed is too slow. 2.0 is the minimum for any reasonable speed. That is why winXP 32bit is as vintage & as modern as I go. My oldest rig is 10 years old, newest is 6. I can make decent music on any of them...but I would not dare try anything older. Kudos to you on your effort though...I may try to revive my old windows 98 e-machine...only 800 mhz though...cutting it close!
