NuBus (pron. 'New Bus') is a 32-bit parallel computer bus, originally developed at MIT and standardized in 1987 as a part of the NuMachine workstation project.[1] The first complete implementation of the NuBus was done by Western Digital for their NuMachine, and for the Lisp Machines Inc. LMI Lambda. The NuBus was later incorporated in Lisp products by Texas Instruments (Explorer), and used as the main expansion bus by Apple Computer and NeXT. It is no longer widely used outside of the embedded market.

the first mac to feature this type of expansion
was the Macintosh II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_II)
which was introduced in (Mar 1987)

the last macs to feature this type of expansion featured the 601 cpu

up to the 8100 model which was discontinued in (Aug 1995)

the most powerful nubus capable macintosh could be the combination of
a 7100/8100 system with an upgrade card, the max of which is a g3-500mhz cpu
sold by Sonnet

i guess the pro tools users would have wanted to max their available nubus slots.. and gone with the IIFX (6), or the quadra 900/950 (5) for the early 90s pro tools nubus systems

i see the quadra & centris series machines could be bumped up to 100mhz systems
with an upgrade from sonnet http://www.everymac.com/upgrade_cards/sonnettech/presto/presto_ppc.html
