Cubase audio VST v3.553 for windows 95 (May 1998)
« on: September 02, 2014, 04:25:54 PM »
Cubase VST v3.553 full install Released : May 17, 1998
*compatible with windows 95, windows 98
This version is native Windows 95 code + Cubase v3.5 is the first version of Cubase for Windows that is incompatible with Windows 3.11.

this release does not feature vst instruments!!!!
(that is.. it includes VST *effects* but not instruments, instruments were introduced with cubase 3.7 on the pc platform and vst 4.0 on the mac platform)

http://www.defacto2.net/file/view/a92e36

ive had trouble installing this version of cubase on my windows 95c
i think it may require directx 5.0  (i installed directx 7.0A before 5.0.. ooops)
if thats not it i suspect that it maybe its only compatible with a certain combination of win95 os + directx?

although by the timeline that cant possibly be true so its got to be a direct x issue
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX

so it must require directx 5.0 *specifically* to work

it may be that the 3.55 INSTALLATION DISK contains CUBASE AUDIO XT 3.05 and no CUBASE AUDIO XT 3.55 ever existed

It means the Cubase VST 3.55 (32bit) CD also had the old Cubase Audio XT 3.0 (16bit or 68k) installation files as well, so one could run the new VST and the old version of the program with the same red dongle.

As mentionned in the SOS quote, Cubase Audio XT (16bit) was a high-end version of Cubase Audio 3.0 (16bit), that supported various I/O audio interfaces of the time. This was pre-VST/ASIO technology.

The Cubase Audio XT 3.05 files are available in the other thread:

v3.05 is the final 16bit version of Cubase 3.0 (regular, Audio, and Audio XT).
The update files are still available at Steinberg FTP:
ftp://ftp.steinberg.de/Archives/Cubase_preVSTversions/PC/

v3.55 refers to the Cubase VST 32bit version that replaced it on PC, and evolved up to VST 5.x afterwards:
ftp://ftp.steinberg.de/Archives/Cubase_VST/PC

CUBASE PC AUDIO red lpt dongle one can run 3.05 xt as well, do you know if 3.05 xt runs with any other dongles? blue lpt CUBASE VST/32 (v5)?

IIRC my regular Cubase 16bit (2.8 & 3.05) did not run with a blue Cubase VST5 Score educational dongle.
Don't know about a VST5/32 dongle.

Congrats on your build.
Not sure why one would go back to use such a terrible graphical OS as Windows 3.11 though.
Unless you're really need a vintage 386/486 ISA PC, Cubase 16bit runs quite the same on late 90s/early 2000s hardware with a stripped down 16/32bit Windows (98Lite).
