The core 2408mkII system includes a PCI card (the PCI-324), a rack space I/O unit (the 2408mkII I/O), a 12-foot cable to connect them, software drivers for both Mac OS and Windows, and a complete audio workstation software package for Mac OS called AudioDesk.

AudioDesk gives you all of the latest advance features you need to record, edit, mix, process and master an audio project in your Power Macintosh computer. It even includes MOTU’s ground-breaking PureDSP time-stretching and pitch-shifting technology and dozens of real-time, 32-bit effects plug-ins. If you need integrated MIDI sequencing, you can obtain Digital Performer at a special upgrade price.

Most other hard disk recording products - even the ones that cost thousands and thousands of dollars - give you 8 to 16 inputs and outputs in their core system. The 2408mkII gives you 24 simultaneous inputs/outputs for under $1,000. But it gets even better. The 1U rack-mountable 2408mkII actually provides 7 banks of 8 channel I/O: 1 bank of 24-bit analog on balanced TRS connectors, 3 banks of ADAT optical, 3 banks of Tascam TDIF, plus stereo S/PDIF. You can choose any three banks (24 channels) to be active at one time. This means you can hook up three ADATs, three DA-88s, and eight analog devices all at the same time and access any three banks - in any combination of formats - at any time. And you can freely switch formats at any time.

Never before has this much I/O been available in a hard disk recording system anywhere near this price.
How does the 2408mkII do it? While other companies rely on stock DSP chips for their I/O processing, we’ve developed a custom VLSI chip, supercharged for massive I/O. And because our chip is dedicated entirely to I/O, it outperforms the DSPs in other systems, which are forced to juggle I/O bandwidth and effects processing.

8 analog inputs/outputs with 24-bit converters on balanced/unbalanced 1/4" TRS connectors
105dB S/N ratio (A-weighted)
24 channels of ADAT optical input/output
24 channels of TDIF (Tascam digital) input/output
2 channels of S/PDIF in and 4 channels out
16, 20 and 24-bit recording at 44.1 or 48 kHz
ADAT sync input
Word clock in and out
Digital Timepiece Control track input
Includes cross-platform PCI-324 card

uses the 324 or 424 card (in either pci, pci-x or pci-e format, check what type of card u have , the type of card u have greatly determines machine hardware compatibility, but you can purchase a new card to gain compatibility, ie: if u own a pci-x card u can buy a pci-e card to be able to use your motu 2408 with a pci-express capable machine)
i believe the interface is also compatible with the 324 version card but this limits functionality + features a bit (ie: cuemix dsp)

supports mac + pc
the drivers page on the motu site is a bit hard to comprehend at a glance so ive dumbed it down here:

MOTU SHIPS 2408mkII WITH BALANCED QUARTER-INCH 24-BIT ANALOG
MOTU UPDATES 2408 WITH BALANCED 24-BIT ANALOG I/O
CAMBRIDGE, MA, MARCH 10, 2000 — Leveraging the phenomenal success of the groundbreaking 2408 hard disk recording system, Mark of the Unicorn, Inc. (MOTU) has
enhanced the analog section of the 2408 by adding 24-bit converters and balanced
+4/–10 quarter-inch (TRS) connectors. The enhanced version, named the 2408mkII,
replaces the original 2408 and is now shipping at the same price. The 2408mkII can
still accommodate unbalanced input signals via software boost or individual, userconfigurable jumpers for the 2408mkII’s eight analog inputs.
“The 2408mkII offers stunning, 24-bit analog recording at the same incredible price as
the original 2408,” said Jim Cooper, MOTU’s marketing director. “And the 2408’s analog
section is now more flexible, as it can accommodate balanced or unbalanced inputs at
either +4 dB or -10 dB. A year and a half after it first shipped, the 2408 still
stands as an unrivaled, break-through hard disk recording system, and we feel that
these improvements to the analog section will keep the 2408 way out in front of any
other similar products.”
The 2408mkII ships from the factory configured with +4 “line-level” analog inputs and
outputs. The eight analog inputs have individual, user-configurable jumpers that add
10 dB of gain to accommodate unbalanced -10 dB signals, which are typically produced
by synthesizers, samplers, drum machines and other common audio sources. As a more
convenient alternative, users can boost input levels via the 2408mkII’s included
CueMix console software, which can add 6 or 12 dB of boost per channel via software
without the need to modify circuit board jumpers.
The 2408mkII includes 3 banks of ADAT optical I/O (24 channels), 3 banks of Tascam
TDIF digital I/O (24 channels), stereo S/PDIF in/out, an extra S/PDIF out, and
balanced quarter-inch main outs. All digital inputs and outputs pass a full 24 bits.
The 2408mkII offers 24 channels of simultaneous I/O expandable to 72 channels. Wave,
ASIO, and Sound Manager drivers are included for compatibility with all major audio
software applications for Macintosh and Windows. The 2408mkII can resolve with other
digital audio devices via word clock in/out, and sample-accurate synchronization is

provided for both Alesis ADATs and Tascam DA-88s (with the aid of the Tascam sync
capabilities of the MOTU Digital Timepiece A/V synchronizer).
The 2408mkII is available both as a core system (includes the PCI-324 audio card and
AudioDesk™ workstation software) and as an expansion I/O for any MOTU 2408, 1224, or
24i core system. The 2408mkII is 100% compatible with original 2408 systems.
The 2408mkII is available now. Core system price remains $995. Expansion I/O price
remains $695.
