ExtremeZ-IP, an Apple Filing Protocol server from GroupLogic, Inc, (Arlington, Virginia, USA), runs on Windows operating systems enabling Mac clients to access files via the Apple Filing (AFP 3.3) protocol. Starting with version 8.0, the Network Reshare capability allows an ExtremeZ-IP server to proxy access to file shares on a secondary file server or NAS device such as NetApp or Isilon. ExtremeZ-IP also provides access to other Windows services such as printing, searching, file system archiving, distributed file system and volume shadow service.

ExtremeZ-IP
Developer(s)   GroupLogic, Inc.
Stable release
9.0.0 / 4 Sept 2014
Operating system   Windows
Type   Apple Filing Protocol
License   Proprietary
Website   http://www.grouplogic.com/products/extremeZ-IP/
ExtremeZ-IP supports Macintosh clients running Mac OS 9.2 through Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks.

ExtremeZ-IP (extremez-ip.exe) requires Windows and supports Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 (R2, 32-bit & 64-bit), Windows Storage Server, Windows Home Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows XP, Windows XP Embedded, or a Windows Powered NAS.

ExtremeZ-IP was the first third party file server to support Time Machine (Apple software) and to support searching via Apple's Network Spotlight (software) that provides indexed content search. This search is accomplished by translating and passing the search query to Microsoft's Windows Search service and passing the results back to the Mac user via a reverse process. ExtremeZ-IP links Macs to Microsoft's Distributed File System (Microsoft) (DFS) and, with the optional ShadowConnect, to Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshots.

ExtremeZ-IP version 9.0 added the option to index remote volumes to enable Spotlight searching for Mac users against remote volumes that don't have a local index search capabilities including network attached storage (NAS) from EMC, NetApp, Isilon and StorNext SAN volumes.

Group Logic released a new version of ExtremeZ-IP, the networking software that connects Macs to Windows-based servers. ExtremeZ-IP 5.0 is aimed at boosting the reliability and scalability of Mac-to-Windows-server file-sharing while simplifying IT support and increasing productivity via improved performance and caching.

The latest version of ExtremeZ-IP supports multiple releases of the Mac OS, from OS 9 up through OS X 10.5, the next major OS X release slated a spring 2007 debut. (Group Logic plans to put out a free upgrade for ExtremeZ-IP 5 users after OS X 10.5’s release to finalize compatibility with Leopard.)

Apple Filing Protocol (AppleShare®) over TCP/IP for Windows NT

Quote
What is ExtremeZ•IP?

ExtremeZ•IP is an Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) over TCP/IP file sharing service, providing file sharing to Macintosh clients from a Windows NT Workstation or Windows NT Server machine. With ExtremeZ•IP, a standard Macintosh client can access files on a Windows NT Server or Windows NT Workstation at speeds of up to four times greater than Windows NT Server's built-in Services for Macintosh (SFM).

Provides AppleShare over TCP/IP file sharing for Windows NT at up to 20MB/second.
No client software needed - uses AppleShare client built into Mac.
Enables Macs to take advantage of Gigabit Ethernet speeds.
Product Overview

How does it work?
Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) servers can run on top of AppleTalk or TCP/IP for better performance and routability.

What is the benefit?
ExtremeZ•IP provides up to four times the performance of SFM running on a 100BaseT network and up to six times the performance when running on Gigabit Ethernet (compared to 100BaseT). In addition, TCP/IP can be routed over the Internet, so Mac bolumes can be shared across the Internet.

Can I use Windows NT Workstation as a "server"?
With ExtremeZ•IP, you don't need Windows NT Server to share Mac files. Small workgroups can now use Windows NT Workstation, making NT an alternative to Macintosh-based AppleShare IP servers.

What about RIPs running on Windows NT Workstation?
ExtremeZ•IP operates on top of the Windows NT AppleTalk network protocol stack, it does not replace it. Therefore, other applications that use this stack will still work. With ExtremeZ•IP, some RIPs that used Windows NT Server file sharing, but also use the AppleTalk stack, can now run on Windows NT Workstation - saving hundreds of dollars.

How fast is it?
Using Helios Lantest 2.0.1 (which measures network speed independent of client disk speed) and Finder copies over Gigabit Ethernet, we see the following results:

Machine   Test   Read   Write
Mac G3 400 MHz   Helios   20 MB/sec   11 MB/sec
Mac PM9600 300MHz   Helios   11 MB/sec   9 MB/sec
Mac G3 400 MHz   Finder   9 MB/sec   7 MB/sec
Mac PM9600 300MHz   Finder   6 MB/sec   5 MB/sec

Over 100 BaseT, ExtremeZ•IP provides between two and four times the performance of Windows NT Server SFM.
What is required?
ExtremeZ•IP requires Windows NT Workstation or Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 3. It also requires AppleShare client version 3.7.4 or later on the Macintosh. This is the client that supports AppleShare over TCP/IP, and it runs on Mac OS 7.5.3 or later.

Product:        ExtremeZ-IP
Version:        02.00.01.00

ExtremeZ-IP gives Windows NT the ability to serve files to Macintosh clients using AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) services over TCP/IP.  This functionality allows for better performance (because TCP/IP is generally faster than AppleTalk) and enhanced remote access (because it is based on IP, which is generally easier to route than AppleTalk, and is routed over the Internet).
