Digital Orchestrator Plus

From the August 1997 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter
This was one of the software packages we looked at in the June meeting of the MIDI Music and Multimedia SIG. (See the SIG report elsewhere in this edition) Digital Orchestrator Plus is a full-featured digital audio and MIDI sequencer made by Voyetra Technologies with a list price of only $160 (street price around $120). This program was particularly interesting because of the number of tracks it has, and its ease of use. It will allow more than 1000 tracks, each assignable as MIDI or digital audio. Of course, the actual number of tracks you can effectively use will depend on the horsepower under the hood of your PC.

The editing capabilities in this program make it very easy to use. You can edit MIDI and digital audio data using drag-and-drop cut, copy, paste, move and merge. To change to a different key, you can use either MIDI transpose or diatonic transpose for preserving the original key signature. It also has full quantize and humanize features, as well as the ability to set crescendos and fades. And if you make a mistake don't worry, it has up to 100 levels of multilevel undo on all functions.

The on-board mixer allows changes to each track for volume, mute, solo and pan for controlling both MIDI and digital audio positioning and levels in real-time. It also controls track levels for reverb and chorus.

Although Digital Orchestrator Plus has notation printing capability, I found it to be quit limited. You can print out any combination of tracks - up to 10 staves per letter-size page. There is no editing allowed in the notation window, which I found disappointing. You can't, for example, change or add any notes here, or size the music to fit a certain number of measures across the page. It does, however, do a good job of rest suppression for removing unwanted rests from the score. If you just want to quickly print out your music, then it works fine. But if you are serious about notation printing, you should look somewhere else.

The real power of Digital Orchestrator Plus is in the digital audio. You can record digital audio in 16 bit format at 44.1k, 22.05k and 11.025k sample rates in either stereo or mono. You can also import .WAV files and add them anywhere you want in the song. It has a snap-to-grid and wave sync feature to help synchronize the digital audio to the MIDI beat. You can also transform the digital audio recordings with digital delay, echo, chorus, flanging, slapback, compression, gain, filters and more. Each track can be independently looped to preserve hard disk space. There is even a hard disk space indicator for monitoring digital audio recording capacity.

I found this to be a really great package. It has features that are usually found only in very expensive packages (over $500). Requirements for Digital Orchestrator Plus are: 486 DX2/66 or faster, Windows 3.x or 95, 8 MB RAM, at least 10MB hard disk space, and a sound card. To order, or get a free demo copy, contact Voyetra Technologies Inc., at 1-800-233-9377, or on the Web at www.voyetra.com.
