1.. Mac OS 9 works best with Cubase because of Sound Manager issues with OS 8.6. There are actually 2 builds of 8.6. The later build of 8.6 works ok with Cubase but it is hard to tell which one you have…the earlier one or the later one. So, don’t take any chances, just go ahead and install OS 9, it will work better anyway.

2.. Download and install the Pace 2.0 Enabler from www.cubase.net. I know it says USB Floppy enabler and you more than likely don’t have a floppy drive, but you need to have this installed before you install Cubase since it is part of the copy protection system.

3.. Download and install OMS 2.3.8 (Open Music System) for MIDI implementation – it’s necessary if you’re using a USB MIDIinterface. If you don’t want to go out and buy a USB MIDI interface or if you do not want to use OMS, then you can use a Gee Three Stealth Serial Port (available for about $50.00) which allows you to use an older serial port MIDI interface. – More info at http://www.geethree.com/

4.. Install Cubase 4.1. If you have downloaded the update from the web or have a CD ROM with the word “Update” on it then you will need to have your original 4.0, 4.0r2 or 4.0r3 CD ROM handy…more on that later.

5. Before starting Cubase you should trash the Externalizer and the Tun-a Plug-ins from your VST Plug-ins folder. You won’t miss them and they may cause problems with Mac OS 9.

6.. Now you can double click on Cubase. You will first be asked to authorize, so go ahead and click on Authorize. Next you will be asked to insert a floppy key diskette so if you don’t have a floppy drive, go ahead and hit Cancel. Now you will get your challenge code. You can copy and paste this challenge code into an email and send it to Tracy@steinberg-na.com.

***If you want step by step instructions with pictures on how to
do all this, look on your 4.0 CD ROM for the “For Macs without Floppy Disks” folder and look inside that for the “No Floppy Install Details” document
* This is for US registered owners only please – don’t forget to
mention which level of Cubase you have: Standard, Score, or VST/24. You could also fill out your registration card and fax it to 818 678-5199 Attn: but don’t worry, you can use Cubase for 14 days before it expires. Just don’t wait till the 13th day to try and get a response code. For now, go and hit Cancel. Cubase will expand out and ask you to insert your 4.0 CD ROM. If you downloaded the update from the web or have a CD ROM with the
word “Update” on it then you will need to insert your original 4.0, 4.0r2 or 4.0r3 CD ROM. Then you will be asked to enter your Product Authorization code so enter that big long number on the red card that came with your original CD ROM.

** Entering the Response Code.
Until you get your Response code back from Steinberg, you can
use Cubase for 14 days. Every time you start, just hit Continue when it asks you if you want to permanently authorize. When you do get your Response code back you will then click on Authorize when Cubase starts up, then Cancel when it asks you for a floppy key diskette. The next dialog box you will see is the same one that gave you your Challenge code, so go ahead and enter your Response code in the blank space. Hit OK and now you are fully authorized.
