The top of the line dbx compressor/limiter, the 165A revolutionized music limiting with its introduction of OverEasy compression combined with RMS accurate metering and musically appropriate self-adjusting attack and release time constants. A no-compromise product, the 165 soon became a studio sensation. It premiered the idea of true power summing for stereo tracking without waveform cancellation. With the second generation 165A, dbx introduced PeakStop peak blocking for transient protection without the harshness and density of peak limiting.

At the same time it was creating a world-class reputation in the studio environment, the 165 set a standard for driving long lines from house mixers to the stage. The expanded scale analog metering provided engineers with a new look at what was really going on in their signal-information that flew by V.U. meters undetected.

The 165A features the patented dbx VCA with nearly 140dB of deci-linear low-distortion dynamic range, coupled with the patented dbx RMS detector system to respond to the energy-not the waveforms-in the music. By using RMS detection instead of conventional peak or average detection, the 165 closely parallels the function of the human ear. Undoubtedly, this partially accounts for the famous "musicality" of the 165 series.

Because of their success, 165's and 165A's are found in major studios and sound systems throughout the world, where audio quality and rock-solid reliability are paramount.
