Logic 4.8.1 update
« on: August 14, 2019, 12:28:52 AM »
v4.6.1 update actually mentions ASIO2.0 direct monitoring but im not sure if ASIO2.0 support was implemented as of that revision; but its somewhat likely? otherwise why would they mention it?

Update Info Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver/MicroLogic AV
Please note: Some of the improvements described below may not apply to your particular program of the Logic series.

Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver
MicroLogic AV 4.8.1

Windows

Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver/MicroLogic AV:
- The Environment object "chord memorizer" is now fully cross-platform compatible.
- EXS24: The LFO1 parameters "Decay" and "Delay" can now be used with tremolo and pan modulations.
- Improved compatibility with DirectShow plug-ins:

To verify the compatibility of all your DirectShow plug-ins it is necessary to first test every installed DirectShow plug-in with the 'Plug-In Enabler 2'. You will find the application 'PlugIn-Enabler 2' inside the Logic Audio folder after updating to Logic Audio 4.8.1.

Please run 'PlugIn-Enabler 2' prior to the first program start of Logic Audio 4.8.1. If 'PlugIn Enabler 2' detects a non compatible plug-in it will shut down automatically. Run 'PlugIn-Enabler 2' again. All DirectShow plug-ins which are not compatible will be automatically deactivated and the test will continue with the next plug-in in order.

After completion of the tests all compatible DirectShow plug-ins will be shown in the left selection box of the control panel in 'PlugIn Enabler 2'. You can deactivate any unwanted DirectShow plug-in by moving it to the disabled box of the control panel. (To find out more refer to the 'Plug-In Enabler 2' help.)

Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver:
- Improved compatibility with the software 'Reason' by Propellerhead Software.

Logic Audio Platinum/Gold:
- Performance of the Fat EQ has been optimized.
- New preference: Audio > Audio preferences > Plug-in delay compensation. This option is useful for the VST DSP cards 'TC PowerCore', 'Universal Audio UAD-1' and 'Creamware XTC'. It compensates for delays of audio data which might be introduced when using VST plug-ins with VST DSP cards. We recommend turning this option off if no VST DSP card is used. This compensation is effective with effect plug-ins inserted in Audio Tracks and Audio Instruments.
Mac OS

Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver/MicroLogic AV:
- The USB audio support in Logic Audio together with Mac Os 9.2.x and an active network connection could, in some cases, cause problems. When no USB audio device is used we recommend leaving the new option Settings > Global Preferences > Compatibility > Using USB Audio device deactivated.
(MicroLogic AV: Audio > Audio Preferences)

Logic Audio Platinum/Gold:
- Currently ReWire by Propellerheads does not support Apple's multiprocessor technology. Activating 'Multi Processor Support' in Audio > Audio Hardware&Drivers; could cause system overloads and playback interruptions in previous versions of Logic Audio (Platinum / Gold). To prevent this, ReWire is no longer available when 'Multi Processor Support' is active in Logic Audio.

Logic Audio Platinum (with TDM and ESB):
- With DirectConnect version 5.1.1_128, Digidesign is posting an optional DirectConnect extension for download. This version of DirectConnnect uses a smaller buffer size than the DirectConnect extension originally installed by the ProTools installer. The lower buffer size can have a negative effect on the performance of Logic Audio Platinum and the EXS24 together with ESB TDM (EXS24 TDM). Working with Logic Audio Platinum, we strongly recommend to always use the standard DirectConnect extensions, which are originally installed with ProTools. If another version of DirectConnect is present in your system folder, a message window in Logic Audio Platinum will inform you to that effect.

Logic Audio 4.7.3 (Mac)

All versions:

-Optimized USB audio interface support. Please note: To use the EMI 2|6 together with Logic Audio on the Mac, version 4.7.3 is required.

-The environment object "chord memorizer" is now fully cross platform compatible.

Logic Audio Gold / Platinum:

-New preference: Audio > Audio preferences > "Plug-in delay compensation". This option is useful for the VST DSP-cards TC PowerCore, Universal Audio UAD-1 and Creamware XTC. It compensates for delays of audio data which might be introduced when using VST plug-ins with VST DSP-cards. We recommend turning off this option if no VST DSP-card is used.
This compensation is effective with effect plug-ins inserted in Audio Tracks and Audio Instruments. To ensure that this compensation works with insert effects on Audio Instruments please make sure that the UME (Options > Settings > MIDI Interface Communication) is activated.

Logic Audio Silver / Gold / Platinum:

-Improved compatibility with the software "Reason" by Propellerhead Software.

Micro Logic AV:

-Interaction between UME (Unified Virtual and Classic MIDI Engine) and Macintosh modem port improved.

EXS24 4.7.3 (Mac)

-The LFO1 parameters 'Decay' and 'Delay' can now be used with tremolo and pan modulations.
-Several improvements.

Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver 4.7.2
EXS24 4.7.2

Features and Fixes

- A specific synchronization problem between DAE/TDM and Direct TDM has been resolved. (Platinum Mac with ESB TDM)

- "Go to position" now works again if an event editor is simultaneously opened and the same position is used multiple times.

- Improved support for JazzFont/SwingFont symbols: Percussion note heads, trills and articulation symbols are now fully mapped to the corresponding JazzFont/JazzPerc or SwingFont/SwingPerc characters. (Platinum and Gold)

- Noises that occurred before Audio Regions processed via DirectShow-Plug-Ins have been removed. (Windows)

- Song-specific configurations pertaining to DirectShow plug-ins are now loaded correctly. (Windows)

- When automating VST plug-ins, automation data generated via movements on the graphical user interface (if available to the plug-in) are now recorded. (Windows)

The following EXS24 features were introduced with version 4.7, but are described here.

EXS24 Improvements

Song-related EXS24 Sampler Instruments

This feature allows all EXS24 Instruments associated with a song to be saved/loaded into a single folder location, which also contains the song file. These Sampler Instruments will then be exclusively associated with this song. This is useful for two reasons:
Firstly, it makes the archiving and handling of songs, including the associated Sampler Instruments, easier.
Secondly, it makes it simpler to deal with a particular set of samples that will not be used in another song - i.e. vocals, modified drum kits etc.

It works as follows: When opening a Logic song, the EXS24 initially looks for a sub-folder named "Sampler Instruments" in the folder which contains the song file. If such a sub-folder exists, all Sampler Instruments found in this folder are added to the Sampler Instrument flip menu in the EXS24 GUI. This new entry in the Sampler Instrument flip menu will appear as a sub-menu item that matches the song file name. This behavior ensures that the EXS24 will always locate any song-related Sampler Instrument files before searching in the global Sampler Instrument folder.

To make use of this new feature:

- Create a new folder for a song and name it.
- Save the song file itself into this song folder.
- Within this song folder, create a folder named "Sampler Instruments".
- Simply copy/move the Sampler Instrument files required into this folder.
- When Logic is booted, the song is loaded, and an EXS24 instance is opened; a new hierarchical menu item will appear within the EXS24 Sampler Instrument flip menu when clicked. This new menu item will retain the song's name and contains all of the Sampler Instrument entries copied to this folder earlier.
- When saving any newly created or modified Instruments, ensure that you use the "Save as" function and browse to the "Sampler Instruments" folder inside the new song folder.

When saving on a per-song basis, you should observe the following folder hierarchy:
The song folder contains the song file and the "Sampler Instruments" folder.
The "Sampler Instruments" folder contains all Sampler Instruments that are used in this song exclusively.
As the EXS24 automatically locates the audio files associated with Sampler Instruments, it generally does not matter where these audio files are stored. Once circumstance, however, where the storage location of the audio files does matter is as follows: Should you need to archive the song with all related data, or wish to deal with a particular set of samples that will not be used in another song, you will want to store the audio files inside the song folder as well. This will change the folder hierarchy as follows:
The song folder contains the song file and the "Sampler Instruments" folder.
The "Sampler Instruments" folder contains all Sampler Instruments that are used in this song exclusively.
For each used Sampler Instrument, a separate folder containing the audio files associated with each of the Sampler Instruments.

To assist you in doing this, the EXS24 Instrument Editor provides the following functions:

- "Instrument > Copy Audiofiles" copies the audio files of any Sampler Instrument edited in the EXS24 Instrument Editor to the target directory of your choice. In the target location, a folder for the audio files associated with this Sampler Instrument is created. In addition, the Sampler Instrument file itself is also copied.
- "Instrument > Move Audiofiles" moves the audio files of any Sampler Instrument edited in the EXS24 Instrument Editor to the target directory of your choice. In the target location, a folder for the audio files associated with this Sampler Instrument is created.
- The "Backup audiofiles of all USED and ACTIVE instruments of current song" key command copies the audio files of all (active) Sampler Instruments used by the current song to the target directory of your choice. In the target location, folders for the audio files associated with these Sampler Instruments are created. In addition, the Sampler Instrument files themselves are also copied.
- The "Move audiofiles of all USED and ACTIVE instruments of current song" key command moves the audio files of all (active) Sampler Instruments used by the current song to the target directory of your choice. In the target location, folders for the audio files associated with these Sampler Instruments are created.

Importing SoundFont 2 Files

To make use of this functionality:
- Copy or move your SoundFont 2 files into the "Sampler Instruments" folder.
- Select the appropriate file name in the EXS24 Sampler Instrument flip-menu and the file will automatically be converted as it is being loaded.
- An EXS Sampler Instrument file will automatically be created in the "Sampler Instruments" folder which represents the original SoundFont 2 file.
- The raw samples associated with the Sampler Instrument will automatically be placed in a "SoundFont Samples" folder within the Logic program folder.
- Once conversion is complete, the original SoundFont 2 source file/s can be deleted from the hard disk(s).

Should a SoundFont 2 Bank file (a Bank contains multiple soundsÖa General MIDI bank, for example) be loaded, the EXS24 will create a "Bank" folder inside the "Sampler Instruments" folder and also a "Samples" folder inside the "SoundFont Samples" folder. These new folders will have the same name as the SoundFont 2 Bank file, with the word ".Bank" or ".Samples" appended.
- All sounds contained in the bank will automatically have an EXS Sample Instrument file created and placed into the newly created Bank folder. The EXS24 Sampler Instrument flip menu will automatically be updated to reflect the new folder hierarchy.
- All samples associated with the Bank will automatically have a "Samples" folder created inside the "SoundFont Samples" folder, which resides in the Logic program folder.
- Once conversion is complete, the original SoundFont 2 source file/s can be deleted from the hard disk(s).

As an example, a SoundFont 2 bank file named "Vintage Drums" is imported by the EXS24. It contains over 50 individual drum kits from several different vintage drum machines. A new folder named "Vintage Drums.Bank" will be created in the "Sampler Instruments" folder. A second folder named "Vintage Drums.Samples" will be created in the "SoundFont Samples" folder. Both of these folders are found in the main Logic program folder.
The Sampler Instrument flip menu hierarchy is updated and the original Vintage Drums entry is replaced with a "Vintage Drums.Bank" entry. This new entry is a folder that contains the individual Sampler Instruments, which can be selected and loaded as per usual.

Please note: You can store your imported Sampler Instruments in any folder on any of your computer's hard drives. To do so, you must create an alias (shortcut on Windows) pointing to this folder within the "Sampler Instruments" folder located in the main Logic program folder. Care should be taken when importing samples to ensure that when a song is loaded, the associated Sampler Instruments will be found. Except for song-related Sampler Instruments (see above) Sampler Instruments are only searched for in the "Sampler Instruments" folder (or an alias to it). Any Sampler Instruments stored in other locations will not be located and must be loaded manually.

Importing SampleCell 2 Files

The import of SampleCell 2 format files is as per that of SoundFont 2 files.
- Simply copy or move your SampleCell 2 files into the "Sampler Instruments" folder.
- Select the file name in the EXS24 Sampler Instrument flip-menu and the file will automatically be converted while it is being loaded.
- An EXS Sampler Instrument file will be created in the "Sampler Instruments" folder which contains the original SampleCell 2 file.
- The raw samples associated with the Sampler Instrument will be placed in a "SampleCell Samples" folder within the main Logic program folder.
- Once conversion is complete, the original SampleCell 2 source file/s can be deleted from the hard disk(s).

Should you import SampleCell or Akai format Samples, they will appear as a "SampleCell Samples" or "Akai Samples" folder on the same level as the "EXSamples", "Sampler Instruments" and "SoundFont Samples" folders.

8 Channel Surround for TDM Systems
Logic Audio Platinum 4.7 for Mac offers an 8-channel Surround solution for TDM systems. The surround mode can be chosen for each channel, bus or instrument at any time. Audio positioning can be adjusted to perfectly match any musical material or situation. Logic Audio Platinum allows for mixdowns in surround format, with up to eight loudspeaker output channels. Surround formats supported include all common formats, including the most demanding, such as the 7.1 format.
Encoding or decoding does not take place. The use of surround does not imply any manipulation of frequency response characteristics or delay treatment. The processing only affects the relative volume settings for the output pattern selected for that channel. Its up to you to insert plug-ins into the output objects serving as the surround channels, such as delay or EQs, high or low pass filters.
All channels and busses can be set to different surround formats independently. Touch the output parameter field of the bus objects (above the panorama control), and set the output to "Surround" in the flip menu. The pan control is replaced by a two-dimensional surround control. The loudspeakers are represented by colored dots, and the pan position is indicated by a white dot that can be grabbed and moved.
Please note that assigning a surround panner requires more DSP resources as more channels are used to make it possible.

Changing the surround settings of multiple channels simultaneously
You can change the surround settings of all selected channels simultaneously. Select all the objects you want to set to have the same assignment, and hold Option (Mac OS) or Ctrl (Windows). If you do not hold the modifier key, Logic will ask you instead.

The Pan Window
Double-click the surround control that has replaced the pan control. The pan window comes up, giving you a closer look at the surround control. Grab the parameter field in the top of the window, and select the desired surround format, for instance format 7.1, which has been designed for big cinema theaters. The seven loudspeaker symbols appear around the surround control. The routing of the signal to the speaker outputs is intuitively controlled by the position of the blue dot in the surround field, which can be dragged and dropped.
A menu above the surround panner allows the selection of the following surround types:
- "Stereo", "LCR", "Center only", "Quadro", "Pro Logic", "Pro Logic w/o C", "5.1", "5.1 w/o Center", "7.1", "7.1 w/o Center", "EX", "EX w/o Center"
N.B. - This mode is independent for each audio channel.

The movement of the surround position on a given axis and radius is made easier with these functions:
-Hold Command (Mac OS) /Right Mouse Button (PC) to lock the angle.
-Hold Ctrl (Mac OS) /Alt (PC) to lock the radius.
-Hold Option (Mac OS) /Ctrl (PC) to reset angle and radius to the middle.
Move the light blue panorama dot and check out the modifier keys.

LFE Control
The abbreviation stands for "Low Frequency Enhancement" or "Low Frequency Effects", since the LFE output most commonly leads to a subwoofer amp. The use of a subwoofer type speaker is not a must. Technically speaking, the LFE output is nothing more than an additional post fader auxiliary send, with the LFE control as its volume fader. If you want only low frequency signals to reach the output, insert a low pass filter plug-in into the output object which is defined as the LFE "subwoofer" output. A cutoff frequency of 120 Hz is standard for surround applications. With the LFE fader, you can determine the amount of signal from the audio object to be routed to the LFE output. In the surround settings of the audio-hardware & drivers menu you can define which output of your audio hardware will serve as the LFE output (see below: Assigning surround channels to audio outputs).

Surround Automation
As with all of Logic's mixing functions, you can record, edit and playback every surround movement as with pan or volume. These controller numbers are assigned to the surround parameters:
25 = "Surr. Angle"
26 = "Surr. Radius"
27 = "Surr. LFE"

Assigning surround channels to audio outputs
The assignment of the surround channels to the outputs of the audio hardware is accomplished under Audio > Audio Hardware & Drivers > Surround. The standard settings for the Pro Logic, 5.1, 7.1, and EX formats (each of which available with or without center speaker) and LCR (Left-Central-Right) are pre-set, but can be edited.

Bouncing Surround Audio Files
In the surround settings, you can see which file name extensions will be applied to the file names resulting from a bounce procedure. Remember that bouncing a surround mix will create more audio channels than your usual stereophonic bounce/mixdown. These extensions are used to identify the files. By clicking them you can edit the extensions.
Select "Surround Bounce" in the normal bounce dialog, displayed after clicking the bounce button at the bottom right of an output audio object. No matter which bounce button you may have pressed, all outputs selected in the surround settings will be bounced simultaneously.

New Fader Object
An overall "Master" fader is now available to TDM systems. This is helpful for fading in/out all "Outputs" in one go while retaining the relative volume setting differences of the individual output objects.

I/O inserts on TDM systems in Platinum Macintosh
From version 4.7 of Logic Audio Platinum, TDM hardware users can insert external effect processors on audio tracks, inputs, auxiliary tracks, busses and outputs via Logic Audio Platinum's new I/O track insert objects.
- Mono or stereo I/O inserts can be used on both mono and stereo track objects. Reminder: to insert a stereo plug-in on a mono track hold the "alt"(option) key.
- Send volume of an I/O insert can be adjusted on the main "output" objects in Logic Audio, with return volume adjusted on the external effect device.
- As per internal ("native") plug-ins, TDM I/O inserts can now be bypassed by pressing ALT and clicking on the TDM insert point on a channel. To avoid internal feedback loops: I/O inserts can not be placed on the same "Output" or "Input" object.

EVP 88 Support
All Logic Audio 4.7 Versions - Platinum, Gold, Silver and MicroLogic AV - now offer support for the Emagic Vintage Piano 88 Audio Instrument. The EVP 88 is available for separate purchase and offers the sounds of several classic electromagnetic pianos, with 88-note polyphony.

Unified MIDI and Audio Engines
This new functionality integrates Logic Audio's MIDI and Audio engines. This allows a range of new options, which are of particular use for Audio Instruments.
In the Environment window, Audio Instruments can be processed via Logic's realtime objects, such as arpeggiators, delays etc. Cabling of these objects must run IN to the Audio Instrument channel. This new functionality allows a number of creative options, including the layering of Audio Instruments with other Audio or MIDI instruments.
In the Arrange window, the unification of the two engines allows sequences on Audio Instrument tracks to respond to changes made to; the quantise, loop, transpose, delay, velocity, dynamic and gate time parameters in the sequence parameters box.
The new MIDI engine is capable of dealing with sample-accurate time stamp information, which ensures that sample-accurate playback timing is retained for Audio Instrument channels when Environment objects are used for processing.
If you encounter any problems or unusual behaviour:
Please note that unchecking the "Use Unified Virtual and Classic MIDI Engine" checkbox can disable this new functionality. This is accessible via the Options > Settings > MIDI Interface Communication menu.
We would appreciate an email message from you indicating the nature of the problem, and as many system details as you can provide. Please send any messages regarding issues with this new functionality to support@emagic.de In the Subject line, please add the following: "UME".

Hierarchical Menus for Arrange, Mixer and Environment
- Hierarchical Menu structure implemented for audio and MIDI objects defined in the Environment and for native, VST 1.0 and 2.0, DirectX and Audio Instrument plug-ins. These flip menus are accessible from the Arrange window's track list, audio channels and from parameter boxes throughout Logic Audio. Use of these menus greatly accelerates access to different objects and is useful for organizational purposes, particularly on systems with extensive environments or numerous plug-ins.
- To access the hierarchical flip menus, simply click and hold on a MIDI or audio track name in the Arrange window's Track List, an audio channel's insert point or on the Cha parameter value in any Audio object parameter box.
- The hierarchical menu structure reflects Environment layers. Entries in the main and sub-menus are listed in alphabetical and/or numerical order.
- Audio objects are sub-grouped by class - Audio Tracks, Instruments, Bus, Master, Inputs and Outputs, plus stereo in/outputs.
- Multi Instruments are hierarchical and have 16 MIDI channels plus "All" as a submenu. The current program name for each channel is shown as well.
- The "Sort by Layer" setting is also valid for the hierarchical instrument menu: If enabled, the Layer names will be used in the hierarchical path. If disabled, some environment objects are hierarchical regarding their types (e.g. "Instruments" or "Macros").
- Empty hierarchical paths will not be displayed.
- In "Display Preferences" you can disable the hierarchical instrument menu. If disabled, the old style long instrument menus will be displayed.
Note that on MacOS computers, the font size of the hierarchical menus is dependent on the global "Large Local Window Menus" display setting.

Hierarchical Menus for Plug-ins
- Mono and stereo plug-ins are separately grouped by API - Logic, VST or DirectX.
- Logic plug-ins are further sub-grouped by type - Helper, Delay, Modulation, EQ etc.
VST plug-ins can be manually grouped by creating a folder - e.g. "modulation" within the "VSTPlugIns" folder inside the Logic program folder. Simply drag and drop the desired VST plug-ins into this newly created folder and their menu structure will be reflected when clicking on the Logic audio mixer plug-in fields.
Note that Mac OS 8.5 or higher is required for the hierarchical menu functionality to operate.

VST Plug-in Optimizations
- VST 2.0 instruments can now receive VST clock information, making it possible to perfectly synchronize delays, LFOs and other effects to the song tempo. Note that the plug-in must request this information from Logic, and that not all plug-ins do this. Check with the plug-in manufacturer to see if this functionality applies to the particular plug-in used.
- Internal programs of VST2.0 instruments can now be changed via standard program change commands.
- The maximum number of VST plug-ins that can be installed has been increased.
- "All notes off" message sent to Audio Instruments after pressing STOP.

Support of New Fonts in Logic Audio Platinum and Gold
- The professional score editors in Logic Audio 4.7 Gold and Platinum now support the JazzFont™ and SwingFont™ - available at www.jazzfont.com - for Mac and Windows.
- Windows users now also have access to the popular Adobe Sonata Font - available at www.adobe.com.

Extended Zoom Functionality
Logic Audio 4.7 Platinum and Gold extend the existing zoom functionality with new navigation management options. These commands allow selected objects, or a region defined by the locators, to be zoomed to fit the screen. In addition, the last thirty zoom levels and window scroll-bar positions can be freely defined and recalled for each window. There are no default Key Commands for these navigation options, so you will need to assign them in the Key Commands window. Open Options > Settings > Key Commands and in the Search field, type in "nav". This will display the entries described below. Assign Key Commands as per the instructions in your manual.

Store Navigation Snapshot - the current zoom and window position scroll bars settings are saved as a "step" in the navigation path.
Navigate Back - recalls the previous step in the navigation path
Navigate Forward - advances to the next step in the navigation path

New Zoom key commands:
Zoom to fit Selection vertically & horizontally, store Navigation Snapshot
Zoom to fit Selection horizontally, store Navigation Snapshot
Zoom to fit Locators, store Navigation Snapshot

All Zoom commands create a new step in the navigation path. The "Navigate Back" key command allows you to recall the previous zoom settings.

Remember: Using the magnifying glass allows you to zoom in several times. A brief click with the magnifying glass will return to the previous zoom and window position scroll bars settings.

Miscellaneous Improvements & Fixes
- Inserting a plug-in on any channel's insert point will automatically launch the plug-in window. This functionality can be disabled by unchecking the "Open plug-in window on insertion" checkbox in the Audio preferences.
- TDM/DAE is now able to play back WAVE files. Note that DAE 5.1 or higher is required. Also note that there are still the following DAE limitations: either 24 or 16 bit files, NO stereo interleaved files.
- Logic Audio Platinum TDM (Mac): The send levels on track, input and aux channels are raised by about 6 dB.
(Please note: This might change the mix levels of older songs recorded with Logic Audio Platinum prior to version 4.7. An automatic song conversion will be included in the next Logic Audio Platinum upgrade.)
- Left corner change behavior improved. Now dragging the left corner of arrange objects or of notes is suppressed in cases where objects are less than 16 pixels wide. This should prevent accidental changes to the left corner.
- HyperDraw Improvements. Nodes now have a larger "active" area, making editing easier.
- New Hyperdraw of Note Velocity feature. Once active - by selecting View > Hyperdraw > Note Velocity, click-holding at any point in a HyperDraw window will activate the note velocity line tool, much like that found in the HyperEdit window. Releasing the mouse button will then change the tool to a line, which you can visually place onscreen. The end of the line is inserted by clicking a second time. This will automatically scale all note velocities, aligned to the inserted line. Please note that this only makes sense when the sequence area covered by the line already contains notes.
- Hyper Draw: The automatic thinning of closely placed curve points has been optimized.
- Looped sequences can be selected by clicking on loop-repetitions. A short click will select the looped object. Click-holding behaves like a click on the background. All objects are deselected and rubber-band selection becomes active, allowing multiple objects to be selected.
- Logic Audio Mac. Disconnection and reconnection of a USB Unitor Family interface while Logic is running is improved.
- Windows: Synchronization of video playback to sequencer clock improved.
- Windows: New File Selector. The new File Selector allows audio files to be auditioned via the integrated Play button; there is also an AutoPlay function available. Additionally, there is a Recent Directories flip menu, which further accelerates access to your audio files. There are two different versions of the File Selector. One is launched when the SHIFT key is pressed while clicking alongside an audio track in the Arrange Window, and the other when the Add File menu is accessed while in the Audio window. The version opened while in the Audio window is more advanced and allows multiple files to be imported or removed. The show/hide path checkbox allows the drive and folder that contains the audio files to be visible, or not.
- Key Commands which switch to a specific tool now toggle between this tool and the previously selected tool.
- New Key Commands for choosing a specific tool
- New Key Command for closing the plug-in window.
- New Key Command "Record Enable Track". This command toggles between armed/unarmed modes on the selected track in the Arrange window.
- Transformer set to "SysEx Mapper" now converted correctly between Mac and Windows when imported.
- Windows PC AV: ReWire labels show correctly now.
- Double clicking on a send or out assignment panel on any audio channel will "jump" to the allocated Bus/Output channel fader, making navigation in the Environment's audio layer faster. This functionality also works in the Track Mixer. Here, a new Environment window will launch and the destination object will be selected in the Environment's audio layer. Should an Environment window already be open, (with link mode active) this will be used and will update as described.
- Added new command "Create region at current arrange position" from within the Audio window. Command click (Mac) or Right mouse button click (Windows) on a region name will insert the region on the selected track at the current song position. When the sequencer is stopped, the region will be inserted and the song position line will automatically advance to the end of the region, awaiting further input. Should a non-audio track be selected, a warning dialog will appear.
- Plug-Ins: Added "View additional parameters" button (the one with the ones and zeros) to display all parameters not shown in Editor view. This button is only visible when a Plug-In actually has additional parameter in Controls view.
- (Platinum Mac/Windows) Rocket Network: If a local user went online again after a remote user removed a track from a project during their absence (offline) - Logic responded with the message "No Rocket object with the specified ID found". This has been fixed.

EXS 24 Improvements in Version 4.7.0 of Logic Audio

Simplified management of Sampler Instruments
From Logic Audio 4.7, the management of EXS24 instruments gets a complete overhaul. Clearly structured new hierarchical flip menus now allow far more direct access to sounds, rather than scrolling through long lists of Sampler Instruments.
This extremely flexible sound management system can be fully customized. The Sampler Instrument flip menu directly reflects the folder structure established by the user to manage EXS24 instruments. Users can choose to sort instruments in groups - i.e. basses and guitars - by sound type, alphabetically or by project. The organisation of instruments is achieved by simply creating a folder - e.g. "Basses" within the EXS "Sampler Instruments" folder. Drag and drop the desired EXS samples/instruments into this newly created folder and their menu structure will be reflected when clicking on the EXS load instrument field.
The menu is designed to only display sub menus of folders that contain EXS instrument files. Other folders are not added to the menu. Aliases (Mac OS) or shortcuts (Windows) pointing to folders outside the "Sampler Instruments" folder can also added to the menu. Even the "Sampler Instruments" folder itself can be an alias to a folder on a different drive or location.
When choosing an instrument from a sub menu, a bold entry in the top of the main menu is added to show the current instrument selection. The sub menu that contains the selected instrument is also shown in bold type, as are further sub menus. This makes it easy to trace the file path of the current instrument.
Note that on Mac OS, the hierarchical structure is limited to for (4) levels. There is no limit to the number of files that the menu can display, but the maximum number of sub-menus is 100. This limitation of the hierarchical menu functionality may change with future Mac OS updates.

Support of new sample formats
In addition to the EXS24 native, WAV, AIFF and SDII formats (with 8 to 24 Bit resolutions) and the conversion of Akai S1000/S3000 samples, the EXS24 also supports SampleCell (cross-platform) and the Soundfont2 formats (cross platform).

Extended search functionality
To assist in keeping the most complex sample libraries organized, the EXS24 can search for samples and sampler instruments on any network volume. In order to minimize the number of sounds displayed in the search results/instrument menu, you can make use of "Enable Find" which will limit the files displayed to those which contain the word "piano" or "bass", as an example. This will also hide any sub-menus that don't contain the search word.
The "Clear Find" option will display the full menu but does not clear the actual search term typed into the search dialog. This allows you to toggle between the two without retyping the search word, by selecting Enable/Clear Find.
The "Search samples on" preference has been added to the EXS editor. It is used by the EXS whenever it has to search for samples that can't be found in the original location.
- "Local Volumes" - searches only on your local volumes (Mac OS formatted CD-ROM's included)
- "External Volumes" - searches only on external volumes (like Network)
- "All Volumes" - searches on every volume.
Please note that searching on network volumes can take some time.

AKAI Conversion improvements:
- The conversion speed is now up to twice as fast as before.
- Progress bar added
- Improved error checking in cases where a CD can not be read perfectly
- Improved error checking when writing converted files to disc
- Abort possibility added (CMD + dot)
- "Convert entire CD" button added
- On specific S3000 CD's some programs or samples were not found and/or converted. This issue has been resolved.
- A tuning problem with some 22050 kHz files has been corrected.
- Sub-folders with the name of the volume are created when converting a partition. If a volume contains only one program, no sub-folder is created.
- Sub-folders with the name of the partition are created when converting more then one partition.
- Option "Default instrument output volume (headroom)" added.
Please select this BEFORE converting a CD.
For drum CD's, headroom of -3 up to zero dB is possible. For piano/string/pad CD's, headroom of -9 is required, otherwise the sound will clip with polyphonic use of the instruments. In cases where you're not sure of which headroom value to select, choose -6 dB (average).
NOTE: the "Output Volume" can also be changed in the EXS/instruments later.
- Option "Merge programs (same MIDI channel and program change number) into one EXS instrument" added. The default is set to OFF.
N.B. - Note that it depends on the CD if this option should be set to ON or OFF.
A lot of CD's were created for AKAI samplers where several programs contain single velocity layers for one instrument. AKAI samplers require the loading of an entire volume or all necessary single programs to be able to hear/play all velocity layers. All of these single programs are automatically set to the same MIDI channel and also react to the same MIDI program change number. The EXS' AKAI Conversion intelligently checks for these settings and will build one EXS instrument out of multiple single programs. In general, this type of behavior is desirable with these types of CD's. When importing samples of this type, this option should be set to ON. The same is true for drum CD's where single programs contain only one instrument of a complete drum kit (kick/snare/hi-hat/etc. separated) You'll probably want these single AKAI programs to be merged into one EXS instrument as well.
There are, however, a number of AKAI CD's where a single program of an AKAI volume contains the entire instrument, and where other programs in the same volume have the same MIDI channel and MIDI prog. change number preset. On this type of CD, a merge is not desirable and the option should be set to OFF.
- Option "Create interleaved stereo files whenever possible" added. This option should be enabled, as interleaved files offer better performance within the EXS. When performing an AKAI conversion, some audio files are created as split stereo and also as interleaved stereo files. The detection of when it is possible to build an interleaved file is based on information in both the AKAI program and AKAI samples. Both the left and right files must have the same settings; otherwise they can not be used to create an interleaved file/multiple interleaved files.

Additional EXS Improvements
- The number of possible sampler instruments available for simultaneous playback is directly related to the computer's processing and RAM resources.
- EXS24 instruments can now be deleted intelligently via the new "Delete" option in the Instrument menu of the EXS24 Edit window. A built-in security function prevents the accidental deletion of audio files that are used by other Sampler Instruments.
- Windows: "Load Multiple Samples" in EXS instrument editor is now possible.
- PreListen function within the new file selector on Windows
- EXS plays a sine wave if the assigned wave file is not found
4.6.3(Platinum Mac)

- Transmission of MIDI Time Code (MTC) under heavy performance load has been improved.

4.6.2

Mac OS:
- Full Compatibility with the Mac OS 9.1.

Mac (Platinum):
- The TDM Tape Delay (TDM) receives correct tempo information.
- Third party TDM plug-ins: Due to the nature of some third party TDM plug-ins their settings would not restore after opening a song. This has been fixed.

Mac/Windows:
- "Audio -> Sample Editor -> Edit -> Search Zero Crossings": The menu now indicates (bullet) whether this function is selected or not.
- Hyper Draw: The automatic thinning of to closely placed curve points has been optimized.

Windows:
- PC AV: ReWire labels show correctly now.

Mac/Windows (Platinum)
- Rocket Network: If a local user went online again after a remote user removed a track from a project during their absence (offline) - Logic responded with the message "No Rocket object with the specified ID found". This has been fixed.

4.6.1

For Mac users only: If you are updating from Logic Audio Platinum 4.6 please refer to the 4.5.1 update info as well. If you are updating from Logic Audio Platinum 4.5.1 please refer to the 4.6 update info as well.

1 New features

Japanese localisation (Mac OS only)
Logic Audio can now be set to use Japanese as the interface language via the "Settings > Display Preferences > Japanese" menu option. Please note that you have to use a japanese MacOS in order for this function to work properly (Macintosh).

Master volume fader
The master fader changes all output gains. It acts as a separate attenuator stage; the level relations between the output objects are not affected. This is very helpful as an proportional output volume control and is particularly useful for surround mode in Logic Audio Platinum (fades of the complete surround mix).
The master fader is an audio object with the "Cha" parameter set to "Master". Moving the master fader does not affect the position of the output object's sliders itself but the signal levels directly. Thus the level changes are reflected in each output channel's level meters.
Currently the master fader is not available for TDM-based systems.

2 General improvements

Enhanced multi processor implementation (Macintosh).

Further refinements of the OMS implementation (Macintosh).

The Spanish localisation has been further enhanced.

The "goto Positionœ" dialog (key command ) now correctly updates the SMPTE position display in the Transport window.

In the Sample editor, the "Edit > Insert Loop" command has been removed. The "Edit > Selection -> Loop" command offers the same functionality.

If a MIDI driver crashes when sending SysEx or opening the port, Logic will notify you in the next session that the driver has been disabled. You can re-activate it in Logic after you have updated the driver. Please contact the driver's manufacturer for an updated version.
If a MIDI driver cannot be opened, the message now contains a button to disable it permanently. To re-activate a de-activated driver open the "win.ini" file with the corresponding editor. In the [Logic] section you will find a list of all MIDI drivers recognized by Logic Audio. Following the driver name you will find a number. Set this number to "1" (activated) or "0" (deactived) according to your needs (Windows).

The default MIDI input buffer size for non-Emagic drivers changed from 32 KB to 60 KB to allow correct handling of large sysex dumps (Windows).

The combination of Logic and Logitech MouseWare Extension has been improved (Mac).

The switch "Monitoring" in "Audio > Audio Hardware & Drivers > DRIVER" (DRIVER stands for the audio hardware/driver you use) has been renamed to "Software Monitoring" for its increased functionality. With "Software Monitoring" engaged, monitoring is done by Logic. With "Software Monitoring" disengaged the audio card and its driver is responsible for monitoring. E.g., if your audio hardware supports ASIO2.0 zero latency monitoring and you want to use this feature, disable "Software Monitoring". Please note, that Logic's Audio Input Objects are fully functional (e.g. use their inserts and bus sends for live effects) only with "Software Monitoring" enabled. With "Software Monitoring" disabled they will only deliver the monitor signal coming from the audio hardware/driver.

The EASI MME Extension 1.0.0.3 now supports two further formats:
- a sample rate of 96kHz (provided the driver and the hardware offer this feature);
- support of WDM drivers when using Windows Millenium™.
(Windows)

3 Plug-ins and audio instruments

ES1
Further increases in ES1 performance. The beat sync parameter now works correctly with the "smooth" random LFO waveform.

Fat EQ
The shelving filter's slope characteristics for bands 2 & 4 are now adjustable via the Q parameter.

4 Copy protection handling for ES1 and EXS24

We did improve the copy protection handling for your convenience. Now a progress bar (Mac) or a small window (Windows) appears while checking CD copy protection. Warning messages will warn you on time that your CD authorization expires. You can reauthorize immediately or continue. If a wrong disk is inserted when authorizing (Mac), it is ejected automatically.

5 RocketNetwork support

Further refinements to the implementation of Rocket Network technology in Logic Audio Platinum.

Post selected track
The new menu entry "File > Rocket Network > Post selected track " will ONLY post the currently selected track, thus cutting down on data transfer time. The regular "post" command (Rocket button) will transmit ALL changes made since the last "post" procedure.

Revert to last posted
The new menu entry "File > Rocket Network > Revert to last posted" will revert the song to the version currently stored on the Rocket server, thereby discarding all changes you have made since your last "post". This is similar to the "revert to last saved" option found in Logic Audio.

4.6.0 (Platinum only)

Logic Audio Platinum Version 4.6.0 was the first version to contain RocketPower. Please refer to the Readme installed during the update for the documentation of Rocket Power. You may also jump to the Emagic Studios Website.

4.5.1

- The USB MIDI problem with the new G4 computers ("Gigabit Ethernet") is fixed. The Logic 4.5.1 updater automatically adds the new "USB Unitor Family Driver" version 1.2. This new driver is essential for the USB bug fix to work and must be located inside the Extension Folder within your System Folder.

- Multi Processor Support: The internal, native audio engine is now able to take advantage of the new dual-processor Apple Macs. (Mac AV, Audiowerk, 1212I/O, DirectI/O, ASIO, StudI/O, EASI). - Enable the Multi Processor Support check-box within the audio driver preferences.

- In the Matrix window the head of a note (start-point) can be changed while keeping the original end-point. This is done by grabbing and dragging a note at the bottom left corner. This function is similar to adjusting the startpoint of a sequence in the arrange window.

- "Video to Audio adjustment" renamed to "Video to Song adjustment"

- Audio files can now be dragged directly into the arrange window (just like MIDI files). You do not need to drag them in the audio window first.

- The "MMC Locate" command is now also sent in internal sync mode (if MMC is enabled).

- Fast Forward and Fast Rewind (Transport): A short mouse click will jump to the next or previous marker. If no markers exist, a short click will jump 1 bar forward or backward. Long clicks will rewind or fast forward as in earlier versions. Moving the mouse left or right will increase or decrease the rewind/forward speed.

- EXS 24: Improved AKAI S3000 conversion

Audio Input Objects
Logic Audio Gold, Platinum
Audio input objects are available for these audio hardware types:
-Mac AV (MacOS)
-PC AV/EASI (Windows)
-Audiowerk
-Direct I/O
-StudI/O (MacOS)
-Korg 1212 (MacOS)
-EASI (MacOS)
-ASIO.

This new class of audio object represents the audio inputs of your audio hardware. You can open an audio input object this way:
-Choose the Audio layer in the environment.
-Choose New > Audio Object.
-Double-click the audio object.
-In the parameter box of this new audio object set the Cha parameter to "Input 1".

To make working with audio input objects as easy as possible for you, we have designed them to be practically identical with the other audio objects you are already familiar with. This makes the functionality of the audio input objects self-explanatory. The plug-ins, like Logic's reverb and delay effects, also work while Logic is stopped. In other words: They behave just like external hardware processors. Bus sends can be used pre- or post-fader.
With the audio input objects you can, for example, replace your old mixing desk or save time while bouncing:

Audio input objects simplify bouncing
The input audio objects make the bouncing procedure much easier, since there is no longer any need to record the audio signal of your MIDI devices before their output can be bounced (mixed down) together with the other audio recordings. Thanks to the live audio input objects, you can mix down the audio signal from your external hardware MIDI synthesizers and sound modules into a stereo mix (by bouncing an output object).

Please note that at the moment while recording (not while bouncing), the effects of audio input objects are not active and are thus not recorded. This will be changed in upcoming versions.

Surround
Logic Audio Platinum
Surround is available for these audio hardware types:
-PC AV (including EASI and EASI MME)
-Audiowerk
-Direct I/O
-StudI/O (MacOS)
-Korg 1212 (MacOS)
-EASI (MacOS)
-ASIO.

Logic Audio Platinum allows for mixdowns in surround format, with up to eight loudspeaker output channels. Surround formats supported include all common formats, including the most demanding, like the 7.1 format. To use surround, the audio hardware and driver must have and support more than two outputs.

Encoding or decoding does not take place. The use of surround does not imply any manipulation of frequency response characteristics or delay treatment. The processing only affects the relative volume settings for the output pattern selected for that channel. It's up to you to insert plug-ins into the output objects serving as the surround channelsˆsuch as delay or EQs, high or low pass filters.

All channels and busses can be set to different surround formats independently. Touch the output parameter field of the bus objects (above the panorama control), and set the output to "Surround" in the flip menu. The pan control is replaced by a two-dimensional surround control. The loudspeakers are represented by coloured dots, and the pan position is indicated by a white dot that can be grabbed and moved.

Changing the surround settings of multiple channels simultaneously
You can change the surround settings of all selected channels simultaneously. Select all the objects you want to set to have the same assignment, and hold Option (MacOS) or Ctrl (Windows). If you do not hold the modifier key, Logic will ask you instead.

The Pan Window
Double-click the surround control which has replaced the pan control.

The movement of the surround position on a given axis and radius is made easier with these fuctions:
-Hold Command (MacOS) /Right Mouse Button (PC) to lock the angle.
-Hold Ctrl (MacOS) /Alt (PC) to lock the radius.
-Hold Option (MacOS) /Ctrl (PC) to reset angle and radius to the middle.
Move the light blue panorama dot and check out the modifier keys.

LFE Control
The abbreviation stands for "Low Frequency Enhancement" or "Low Frequency Effects™, since the LFE output most commonly leads to a subwoofer amp. With the LFE fader, you determine how much signal from the audio signal of the actual audio object is to be routed to the LFE output. In the surround settings of the audio-hardware & drivers menu you can define which output of your audio hardware will serve as the LFE output (see below: Assigning surround channels to audio outputs).

Surround Automation
As with all of Logic's mixing functions, you can record, edit and playback every surround movementˆjust like pan or volume. These controller numbers are assigned to the surround parameters:
25 = "Surr. Angle"
26 = "Surr. Radius"
27 = "Surr. LFE"

Select "Surround Bounce" In the normal bounce dialog which shows up after clicking the bounce button at the bottom right of an output audio object. No matter which bounce button you may have pressed, all the outputs selected in the surround settings will be bounced simultaneously.

New Audio Engine
Windows
All Windows versions of Logic Audio now work with a new, significantly improved audio engine that now has much more in common with the Macintosh version. It offers shorter latency times, faster fader response, improved VST support and overall better performance. Monitoring, that is, listening to the input signal at the audio output, is now available for all adaptations under Logic Audio for Windows. There are six drivers in total available to use; you will find these on the pages "Audio Drivers" and "Audio Drivers 2" in the Audio menu.

Please note: For the previous Windows audio engine Emagic implemented certain workarounds that were required by some audio drivers due to third-party incompatability issues. Due to the radically new audio engine architecture these workarounds could not always be translated from the old audio engine. In most cases the new audio engine will simply work better, but it is possible that certain sound cards may be incompatible or impossible to use. In these cases, please use a pre 4.5 version of Logic Audio.

If you encounter a situation as described above, please send an email direct to support@emagic.de with the subject "New Windows Engine". Please do not forget to give us a complete description of the problem, especially which audio hardware and drivers were used. On the other hand, it is also possible that your hardware now provides much better performance than before. We will be pleased to receive information of this nature as well, because we would like to make this available to all users. Please use the same heading as above.

Changes in comparison to former Logic Audio Windows Versions
In former versions, we had four categories of hardware types: PC AV, Roland VS, DS 2416 and Audiowerk. PC AV was used to support EASI, ASIO, MME and Direct Sound. The integration of the DS2416 took place via an MME driver in PC AV.

With Logic Audio Windows 4.5, we have PC AV, Roland VS, Audiowerk, Direct I/O, DS 2416 and ASIO. "PC AV™, now uses only the EASI (Emagic Audio Streaming Interface), with support for both MME and Direct Sound devices via "EASI MME™ and "EASI DS™, replacing former MME and DirectSound support.

The PC AV driver communicates with the audio hardware using the EASI protocol (Emagic Audio Streaming Interface). There are two dedicated drivers called "EASI MME" and "EASI DS" which replace the former MME and Direct Sound drivers. These are accessible in the Driver parameter field in the PC AV area of the Audio Driver menu page.

There are separate drivers for Audiowerk, Direct I/O and ASIO, and also there is a dedicated driver for the integration and remote control of Roland-VS-machines VS-880, VS-880 EX and VS-1680. The direct connection to Digidesigns I/O interface is new. This affects the Audiomedia III and Digi 001.

ASIO drivers are now a separate category. The Yamaha DSP factory is now supported via the ASIO driver. Assign it in the ASIO driver field, but do not activate the ASIO selection box, activate the DS 2416 box instead. Former versions used the PC AV driver for the DSP factory, which is no longer possible. With the ASIO DSP Factory driver, you can use plug-in synthesizers and other virtual instruments with the DSP factory.

New Audio Engine Parameters in the Windows Versions

-Volume Smoothing [ms]
This parameter defines the length of the fade between two consecutive volume values for an audio track. When setting this value to 0 you might hear ™zipper noise™ when moving a volume fader during playback. Higher values soften the volume changes and eliminate the zipper noise.

-Max. Number of Audiotracks
The Audio Engine requires free system memory. The amount of memory needed depends on the maximum number of tracks to be played, and on the number of I/O channels supplied by the driver. This setting allows you to reduce the amount of memory used by the driver, by reducing the number of tracks. This may be sensible when you want to run other applications or audio hardware types simultaneously.

-Larger Disk Buffer
This option influences the amount of audio data that is read from the disk in advance. This option is switched off by default, matching the demands of fast hard drives and powerful computers. If you get frequent error messages while running Logic Audio in this mode, you should switch this setting on, so that you can play back more tracks, achieving higher reliability. However, more RAM is needed in this case.

-Larger Process Buffer
This parameter determines the size of the native buffer used to compute mixers and effects. Do not activate this option if you own a fast computer. This shortens response times to operations such as volume changes or Solo. Experiment to find the setting that coaxes the best performance from your system.

Hints concerning using various hardware types with the new Windows Audio Engine

-DirectShow plug-in Integration
Due to some technical changes, some Direct Show plug-ins may not appear in version 4.5. If so, then exit Logic, and start the latest version of the plug-in enabler in order to re-activate the deactivated plug-ins ˆ assuminmg that these had been working correctly before.

-VST plug-in Integration
VST plug-ins are not handled by the plug-in-enabler in the current version of Logic Audio 4.5. The plug-in enabler is only responsible for Direct Show plug-ins. In order to use VST plug-ins under Logic Audio 4.5, these plug-ins have to be located in the "Vstplugins™ folder, which must be located in the Logic folder. In order to prevent particular plug-ins from being shown in Logicðs plug-in list, move the plug-in file to another folder, which could be named "Vst_unused™.

-EASI MME
Sound cards that only have an MME driver, can be used utilizing the EASI MME driver supplied by Logic Audio 4.5. In order to configure it, please start the file "EASIMME.exe™ in the Logic folder. More information about this is supplied by the EASI MME HELP file. In order to use the desired configuration with Logic, select the EASI MME driver under PC AV in the Audio Hardware & Drivers page in Logicðs Audio menu.

-EASI DirectSound
If you want to use a DirectSound (stereo) driver for your sound card in Logic, please select the driver "EASI DirectSound™ in Logicðs audio hardware configuration page. In order to configure it, please start the file "LogicAudioDeviceSetup.exe™ in the Logic folder and create a virtual device containing the appropriate DirectSound driver. More information about this is supplied by the Logic Audio Device Setup HELP file.

-Yamaha DSP Factory (Logic Audio Gold, Platinum)
In order to directly access Yamaha's DS2416, switch on the DS2416 option on Logicðs second audio hardware configuration page. The I/O handling is no longer controlled by MME in 4.5, but by ASIO. Settings like the clock source have to be set in the ASIO section, directly under the DS 2416 option.
Yamaha has recently released new ASIO drivers (version 2.4), available in 16 Bit and 32 Bit versions. The 32 Bit driver allows for the configuration of the latency between 500 and 3072 samples. In order to use the DS2416 together with an SW 1000 sound card, the support of the SW 1000 in the ASIO driver of the DSP Factory has to be switched OFF! Also, the parameter clock source in the ASIO section has to be set to "SI™ (serial in).

-Direct I/O
In order to directly access Digidesign hardware using the Direct I/O interface, switch on Direct I/O in the second audio hardware configuration page. A Direct I/O driver has to be installed on the system in order to do so (for example Wave Driver version 1.6 or higher). For more information, please ask Digidesign.

Automatic Conversion of Compatible Audio Configurations of Songs<BR> MacOS and Windows
If you load a song that has been created with, say, PC AV or Mac AV with Logic Audio 4.5, running on a machine currently using ASIO (for instance), Logic will ask whether to switch from PC AV or Mac AV to ASIO. Thus, the song can be played back immediately, without reassigning all the audio objects used (tracks, busses, audio instruments§) manually. The plug-in effects used will be recognized with all their settings.

EASI for the MacOS versions
MicroLogic AV, Logic Audio Silver, Gold, Platinum
Emagic's standard for the integration of audio hardware, EASI, is now available for the Mac versions, as well as the Windows versions. Soundcard manufacturers now have an interface, so that their audio hardware (like PCI soundcards) can easily be adapted for the Macintosh.

16 Audio Instruments
Logic Audio Gold, Platinum
Logic Audio Gold and Platinum allow for 16 virtual Instruments to be used simultaneously (Software synthesizers and samplers). These can be ES1, EXS 24, or VST instruments.

VST2.0- and DirectSound-Plug-In-Support
MicroLogic AV
With MicroLogic AV 4.5 VST2.0 (Mac and Windows) and DirectShow (Windows only) plug-ins can now be used.

Improved display of audio instrument plug-ins
MacOS and Windows versions
Audio instruments now appear in plug-in-lists separated from the lists of plug-ins designed for audio signal processing.

MMC Input and "Full Frame Messages"
Logic Audio Gold, Platinum
Logic Audio Gold and Platinum now can be controlled by MMC (MIDI Machine Control) and so-called äFull Frame Messageså as well (Listen to MMC Input). äTransmit MMCå has been available in Logic for quite some time.
By clicking the sync button of the Transport bar, you can open the synchronisation settings. Select the MIDI page and switch on the Listen to MMC Input parameter.
Logic Audio then recognizes these commands:
-Play,
-Deferred Play and
-Stop.
Deferred Play is a special command for mechanically slow synchronisation slaves like reel tape recorders. Instead of making the machine play immediately, the machine is asked to reach the desired SMPTE position first, before playback is started. You'll find no difference in Logic's response to the äplayå and ädeferred playå commands, since Logic can locate as quickly as any hard disk recorder.
Logic Audio ignores these message, when incoming external MTC (MIDI Time Code) commands are being detected.
Logic also obeys so-called äfull frame messageså, setting Logic's song position line to a new position, without starting playback. Once again, incoming MTC data receive higher priority if conflicting information is received.
Some synchronizers send "Full Frame Messages" instead of MTC to locate the slave device (Logic in this case) to a new position without implicitly starting the playback. This is useful for example, when in slow shuttle or single frame advance with video machines, because the slave device is perfectly located without being in playback mode.

Audiowerk
Logic Audio Silver, Gold, Platinum; MacOS
The Audiowerks I/O Buffer size driver parameter can be set to smaller values, in order to shorten the latency for monitoring and for use of virtual instruments like the ES1 synthesizer-plug-in or the EXS 24 sampler-plug-in.

Using OMS and Logic's proprietary MIDI driver in parallel
Logic Audio Platinum; MacOS
TDM plug-ins (for TDM hardware by Digidesign), as well as some virtual samplers and synthesizers (but not the EXS 24 or the ES1) must be controlled via OMS (Open Music System). OMS and Logic's proprietary MIDI driver can now be used in parallel. This gives the advantage of being able to control external MIDI-Instruments with the timing precision of AMT (Active MIDI Transmission, only available with Emagicðs MIDI Interfaces AMT8 and Unitor8), which would not be possible in pure OMS mode.

Select Options > Settings > MIDI Interface Communication > "Use OMS in addition to the built-in MIDI driver". If enabled Logic will use the built-in MIDI driver and OMS simultaneously. Everything works very much like using just the built-in MIDI driver. However, the difference is that you have a choice for each environment instrument:

1. If an OMS instrument is NOT set ("OMS unassigned") the object sends MIDI information "normally" to the output port setting if set.
2. If an OMS instrument is set the object sends the MIDI information to the OMS instrument.

Please note:
-The OMS output mapping obviously is not active because it is not neccessary: the object port settings works normally.
-The OMS inputs work in addition to the Logic MIDI inputs.
-Logic initializes first the built-in MIDI driver, and then OMS. This might be important in case both drivers want to grab the same resources like a UNITOR USB driver. Who comes first will win and in this case this is the built-in MIDI driver which gets access to the Unitor. Please remove the OMS Unitor driver from the OMS driver folder in case you get a "Could not use the Unitor driver" message from OMS.

Global Instrument Tune
MacOS and Windows
This new parameter under Audio > Audio Settings remotely controls the main tuning parameter for all audio instruments (plug-in synthesizers, like the ES1 or EXS 24 sampler and others) by ±50 Cents. This is also the case with VST plug-in instruments. Some instruments by other manufacturers may not recognize this remote command.

Yamaha DSP Factory
Logic Audio Gold, Platinum
Yamaha DSP Factory support has been improved in the Macintosh version of Logic Audio as well as in Logic Audio Windows. With Logic Audio Gold/Platinum for Macintosh (and Windows), the use of virtual instruments in the DSP Factory is possible now. 16 audio instrument channels are available. On instrument channels only native plug-ins can be used. Sends to the DS2416 are not possible. The "Output" of an instrument channel is an audio track pair. All instrument outputs are set to "Track 15-16" by default. It is still possible to have audiofiles on that tracks, the signal is mixed with the output of the instruments. Please note that Yamaha has posted new Window ASIO drivers for the DS2416 card, please download them from their web-page. Those ASIO drivers allow to shrink the I/O-buffersize dwon to 512 samples. The default is 2048 as with older ASIO drivers. Yamaha has also fixed the sync problems, a window can now be dragged without problems.

New score features
Logic Audio Gold and Platinum
A new Pizzicato Symbol has been added, and some accent symbols have been graphically refined.

Plug-Ins
Logic Audio Gold and Platinum
Some plug-in parameters have been added to the Gold and Platinum versions. These will be documented in detail in the next update of the reference manual. Please note that all new parameters are only accessible when the plug-in view is switched to "Controls".

Compressor
New parameter "Output Clip" clips the output to 0dB with the settings "OFF / SOFT / HARD".

Oscillator
New parameter "Osc Mode" with the settings "Normal" and "Sine" switches the between the normal oscillator type (the one that you are already familiar with) and a new oscillator type, which produces a pure sinewave without any harmonic distortions. When set to "Sine", the volume sliders for the waveforms except Sine are disabled, but ringmodulation still works. Try "Sine" for even smoother ringmodulation results.

Autofilter
The LFO is is now syncable to bars & beats. Switch "Beat Sync." to "ON", use "BPM Rate" to adjust the ratio between LFO speed and Logics sequencer tempo, and shift the phase relation between the LFO and the sequencer with "Sync Phase".

Tape Delay
A LFO for delay time modulation is now included. Use it to produce very pleasant and special chorus effects even with long delays. The LFO with adjustable speed and modulation intensity produces a triangular wave, which can be smoothed with the "Smooth" parameter. This also smoothes the flutter. Flutter simulates the irregularities in tape speed of the original tape transportation in an analogue tape delay, and is also adjustable in speed and intensity.

Minor Improvements and bugfixes
+ Re-Launch with "Prepare audio when stopped" preference enabled now works correctly. (Windows only)
+ DirectShow-Plug-Ins now works with drivers that have a latency greater then 200 ms (buffer size 8192). (Windows only)
+ The OMS connection for MIDI-driven TDM plug-ins like the Access Virus TDM has been improved (Platinum Mac only)
+ Speed of re-launching an audio device improved.
+ MIDI burst behaviour with USB MIDI interfaces vastly improved.
+ Cross-stave-beaming improved.
+ Miniature note display improved.
+ Menu commands for Stave Shift added to "Attributes" menu.
+ Beaming behaviour improved.

4.3.0

Support for the EXS24 (Mac OS)

4.2.2

+ Crash fixed when usign VST instruments with specific output settings

+ Emagic TDM Plug-Ins are now available in Logic Audio Platinum. Please make sure to install them properly in the DAE Plug-In Folder. (Mac only)

TDM Plug-Ins
With Logic Platinum, the Auto Filter and Tape Delay plug-ins now are available for TDM hardware as well as with host based systems. The functionality is identical with the Auto Filter and Tape Delay available in previous Logic versions.

Please note that these plug-ins can only be used together with Logic Audio Platinum 4.2. It is not possible to use these plug-ins with other TDM-capable software.

Auto Filter

The Auto Filter features an ADSR and LFO with dynamic modulation. Its resonance can be reved up to self-oscillation. Thanks to its "fatness" control, the sound remains warm, even with high resonance settings. Additional controllable distortion circuits at the input as well as the output of the filter allow for more agressive sounds.

Tape Delay

The Tape Delay always follows the tempo of the song, and can be set to either "straight"note values, or values with a definable swing factor. Its tape saturation simulation recreates the classic sound of vintage tape echo units, and filters in the feedback circuit allow for authentic dub echo effects.

Please note that the setting files for Logics native Plug-Ins cannot be read by the TDM-Plug-Ins.

New Score Functions

Time and Key Signature Editor

In the new Time and Key Signature Editor window it is possible to copy, move and delete time signature changes, key signature changes and global score symbols (repeat signs, special barlines etc.).

To open this window, choose Signature/Key Change List Editor from the (global) Options menu. This editor looks and works very similar to the Event List editor, except that new list entries can only be created by copying existing ones.

The following score symbols are displayed in this window as list entries, if they are present in the score of the song (note: the initial time and key signature of the song is always displayed here, without bar position indications at the top of the list):

+ Time signature changes

+ Key signatures / key changes, as displayed in the Score Edit window

+ Repeat signs (repeat start, repeat end, repeat end+start, brackets for first and second endings)

+ Special barlines: double barlines, final double barlines ("end of score"), half/short barlines, hidden barlines (displayed as dotted lines on the screen) and manually inserted regular barlines.

Please note: None of these symbols affects Logic's MIDI and audio playback. However, time signatures not only affect the score display, but also the bar position display in all windows and therefore all functions which somehow depend on the chosen time signature and on bar positions, like the MIDI metronome click or the functions in the Transform Edit window, if bar positions are used to restrict its chosen function to a certain part of the song.

Copying Time and Key Signatures

In this window, time signatures, key changes, repeat signs and special barlines can be copied exactly as in the Event List window:

+ Select all list entries which you want to copy by clicking on them ([shift]+click for multiple selection) and use menu Edit > Copy (key command [command]+[c] on Mac or [ctrl]+[c] under Windows) to copy them to the clipboard.

+ Now insert the copied entries by choosing Edit > Paste (key command [command]+[v] on Mac or [ctrl]+[v] under Windows) .

+ The copied list entries are now being inserted into the list, an entry box opens for the bar position of the first inserted list event. Type the desired bar position in the usual way (like 37,1,1,1) and close that box by pressing the [Return] or [Enter] key. Subsequent list entries are inserted at bar positions that correspond to their original distance in relation to the first copied list entry.

Moving and Deleting List Entries

All list entries in this window (except the initial time signature and key indication at the top of the list) can be moved or deleted . Again, this corresponds exactly to the way the Event Edit window works:

+ To delete a list entry, select it and press the [Backspace] key.

+ To move an entry, you can either click on its bar position with the mouse, keep the mouse button pressed and move the mouse up or down; or you double-click on the bar position of the list entry and type the desired bar position into the entry box which opens after the double-click.

Changing Time and Key Signatures in the List Editor

Existing time signatures and key changes can be altered directly in this list:

+ Their position can be changed as described in the previous section.

+ Time signatures can be changed by positioning the mouse pointer at the nominator or denominator in the list and dragging the mouse up or down to increase or decrese that value.

+ To alter a key signature, either click on the word major or minor to switch between parallel major and minor keys, or click and hold on the root of the key: This opens a pop-up menu with the root notes of all available keys. Select the desired key by moving the mouse to the corresponding note in that pop-up menu.

Individual Alteration of Stem Length

It is now possible to change the stem length of each note individually. This can be used to change the stem length of notes which are not beamed to any other notes, to alter the inclination of a beam that connects several notes by changing the stem length of the first and/or last note under that beam, or to move a beam up or downas a whole in parallel motion, which is especially useful for cross-staff beaming situations (see below).

There are three new menu commands in the Attributes > Stem > .... submenu and also corresponding key commands, which can be found in the Score section of the Key Command window. (As a default, these commands are not assigned to any keys):

- stem end: move up
- stem end: move down
- stem end: default length

As the name implies, "stem end: move up" works independently from the actual stem direction - the end of the stem is always moved up, which results in an incresed stem length if the stem points up, and in a shorter stem length if the stem of the selected note points down. The same principle (with opposite effect) applies to "stem end: move down". Although this method might seem odd at first glance, it is very useful when cross-staff beaming is used and the beam is positioned between the staves: In this case you can simply select all beamed notes and move the whole beam up or down in parallel motion.

Reminder: The general default setting for the stem length can be changed in the "Extended Layout Parameters" window (open via menu Layout). This setting applies to all notes in the song.

Cross-Staff Beaming

Music for keyboard instruments or harp, which is notated in two staves, sometimes contains passages where notes in the upper and lower staff (played by left and right hand) are connected with a beam to emphasize the continuing musical phrase, as shown in the following illustration:

Please note: If you want to use this function, you should already have a good knowledge of all functions associated with Logic's Score Styles. Extensive information about this topic can be found in the Logic reference manual.

Required Settings:

Cross-staff beaming is only possible between staves which belong to the same Score Style and therefore to the same MIDI sequence. Apart from that, the Voices in this Score Style have to have to different MIDI channel assignements - it is not possible to achieve cross-staff beaming with a Score Style that only uses a split point pitch for Voice separation.

The Procedure in Detail:

Since notes can only be connected with beames, if they belong to the same Voice (in the sense of Logic's own terminology), it is not possible to simply select notes in both staves and apply the usual beaming attribute functions to them. As an example, let's imagine a two-staff Score Style with one Voice per staff. Before beaming the notes, it is necessary to assign all notes which are to be connected by a beam to the same Voice, let's choose the Voice of the upper staff for that purpose.

To change the Voice assignments for the notes in the lower staff, you can either use the Voice Separation Tool and draw a line below those notes or select all thse notes and change their MIDI channel in the Event Parameter Box to the channel of the upper Voice.

Now all those notes will be displayed in the upper staff, probably with a lot of leger lines. The next step is to define the beaming connections as desired. This can be done with the regular note attribute functions (menu Attributes > Beaming > Beam selected or corresponding key command).

Now select those notes once more which should be displayed in the bottom staff and choose the menu function Attributes > Voice/Staff Assignment > staff below Voice or the corresponding key command. This moves all selected notes down to the lower staff, although they still remain part of the upper Voice.

You could also choose the opposite approach - first assigning all notes to the lower Voice, then moving part of the notes to the upper staff with Attributes > Voice/Staff Assignment > staff above Voice. To display all selected notes intheir original staff, use Attributes > Voice/Staff Assignment > default staff.

Stem Direction

The default stem direction for notes that beamed across staves is towards the center. I.e. the beam is displayed between the two staves, stems in the lower staff point up, stems in the upper staff point down. The vertical position and the inclination of that beam can be altered by applying the stem length change functions described above: To move the whole beam in parallel motion, select all beamed notes at once and choose Attributes > Stems > Up or ...Down , to change the inclination of the beam, select the first or last note of that group and apply those functions.

However, you can also define the same stem direction for all notes with the regular note attribute functions, thereby placing the beam above the top staff or below the bottom staff. If you decide that you like the in-beteen beam better, you'll have to select all notes again and choose Attributes > Stems > Default.

Rest Display

As always, rests are displayed automatically in Logic, according to the Rest settings in the used Score Style. However, since in the cross-staff beaming situation described above, most or even all notes belong to the the Voice of the top staff, the lower staff will contain rests - even directly at the position of some of the notes. To avoid this, you should use a Score Style where the automatic rest display is deactivated for the Voice of the bottom staff. Wherever rest display is desired, those rests can be inserted with the mouse from the Partbox.

Other Layout Functions

Distance Between Notes and Barlines

The default setting for the relative distance between the first and last note of a bar and the preceding or subsequent barline can now be affected by changing the following two parameters in the "Extended Layout Parameters..." (menu Layout):

+ Bar Start Spacing
+ Bar End Spacing

Please note: To change the default settings of these parameters only makes sense if rather extreme settings have been chosen for the general Spacing parameters in the "Global Format" window.

Accidental Size in Chord Symbols

The size of accidentals in chord symbols (to display the root note, like Ab or F#) in general changes with the font size used by the "Chord Root" Text Style. However, the "Chord Symbol Accidental Scale" parameter in the "Extended Layout Parameters..." window (menu Layout) allows to change the accidental size in relation to that font size setting: Positive values result in an increased size, negative values in a diminished size of chord symbol accidentals. The default setting is zero.

Key Commands for Moving Symbols

The following key commands can be used to move any score symbol that can be positioned independent of notes or staves, as well as text events and chord symbols:

- Nudge Position Up
- Nudge Position Down
- Nudge Position Left
- Nudge Position Right

These functions do not alter the bar position of the affected symbols and text events, but their "hor.pos." and "vert.pos." parameters by +/- 1. Reminder: These parameters define the exact graphical deviation of an object from its bar position ("hor.pos.") and from the top line of the staff ("vert.pos."). The measurement unit for those settings is one sixteenth of the distance between two lines of a staff. Therefore these commands only cause very small movements, so it is recommended to work in a very high zoom level when using these functions for layout work.

Further improvements

ASIO Clock Source (Windows)

Some ASIO Drivers allow to switch the synchronization source for the audio sample rate. In case a driver is offering this choice, you can select it by selecting Audio > Audio-Hardware and Drivers > ASIO Clock Source. In case there is no choice, you¬ll see a "----" or a read-only-text in the flip menu field.

4.1.4

Pulsar/Scope EASI Support (Windows only)

Logic Audio Windows now supports the Creamware EASI driver for Creamware Pulsar/Scope version 1.31 or higher.

Setting up Pulsar

For running Pulsar with EASI drivers you only have to insert an "EASI source" and a "EASI dest" module in your Pulsar Project and connect them to the input and output modules you are using, e.g. to an "ADAT dest" or "ADAT source" module.

The settings for "EASI source" may look like this:

EASI Outs = 8
Channels = 16
Mixing on DSPs = activated
Input Monitoring = off

The settings for "EASI dest." may be:
EASI Ins = 8

Please refer to the Pulsar manual for detailed information about how to setup a Pulsar project.

Setting up Logic

Please choose the Creamware EASI Driver ("EASIScopePlugin") via Audio>Audio-Hardware & Drivers in the section PC AV. In case your choose "Mixing on DSPs" in the Pulsar project - which means that mixing and routing is calculated by the DSPs on the Creamware hardware - it is possible to make further settings under "EASI: Channel distribution if "Mixing on DSPs" is activated:
- Number of Audio tracks: serves as an information, how many audio tracks may be used on the free Pulsar channels
- Number of busses: Allows you to choose the number of stereo busses in Logic. Please note: more busses result in less tracks!
- Audio instruments routable to...: This option offers a choice from 3 possible configurations of the Audio-Instrument Routings:
-- Busses only: Audio instruments have no direct out and can only be routed via Bus-Sends
-- Outputs 1-2 and busses: The Audio instruments signal is routed to Output 1-2 or can be sent to the busses
-- All Outputs 1-2 and Busses: The Audio instrument signal can be routed to all outputs and to the busses.
Please note that any change in these settings require that you reboot Logic Audio.

Bounce-to-Disk with Pulsar:

If "Mixing on DSPs" is activated, it is not possible to use Logics Bounce-to-Disk function. This is due to the fact that the actual mixing is done on Pulsar, and not in Logic.

Roland VS Support

Logic Audio supports the VS product range by Roland. The combination of Logic Audio and a Roland VS canåt be compared with conventional audio hardware. An advantage of the Roland VS is that it can be used as a stand-alone system.

MIDI Cabling

For Logic Audio to communicate with the VS, both MIDI in and out have to be cabled.

- Connect the MIDI out of VS to the MIDI in of your MIDI interface.
- Connect the MIDI out of your interface to the MIDI in of your VS.

MIDI Settings on Your VS

SysEx Communication

Power up your VS, and after it launches and initializes make sure that:

- SysEx Transmit is set to ON (SysEx.Tx = On) and
- SysEx Receive is set to ON (SysEx.Rx = On).

You access the above parameters via "System" then "MIDI" on your Roland VS. Use the "Parameter" keys to select the settings, and the dial to adjust them. Refer to the users manual of your VS, if you can't find these parameters.

The VS stores these settings with each song. That means that when changing to a different song in the VS, you may have to check the above again.

MTC & MMC Parameters of the VS

The VS and Logic Audio are synchronized via MTC (MIDI Time Code).

- Set the VS to be MMC slave. (MMC = Slave)
- Set the VS to transmit MTC (Gen. = MTC)

This parameter is accessed under "Sync/Tempo".

Starting Logic

Start Logic Audio. Select Audio > Audio Hardware and Drivers. Choose VS and select your Roland-VS-type.

If Logic can't find a VS unit you will get a warning message. In this case, please re-verify the MIDI settings on the VS.

MIDI Machine Control (MMC)

- In the main menu, select File > New.
- Set Logic to transmit MMC commands. In order to do so, click-hold the Sync button on the Transport window, and check MIDI Machine Control (MMC).

Just to Remind You...

Autoload Song

If you want to do so, save this newly created song, along with any other desired settings. If you save it with the name "Autoload" in the same location where the LAS-VS version is found, Logic Audio will automatically open this song when launching .

Tempo Changes on the VS

Never change the song tempo in Logic, as this will likely cause the regions to be played out of sync. Do not use Logicås tempo list and the other tempo functions! Any desired tempo changes should be made on the VS unit. Logic Audio always reads the tempo exclusively from the VS.

Playlist

When an existing song is loaded, the VS audio regions found in this Logic song are all deleted, and the Arrange will display nothing on the audio tracks. This is normal, as the playlist is always stored in the VS.

Retrieving the Current VS Playlist

Define a key command for the retrieve-playlist-command. This need be done only once, and Logic Audio will remember it:

- Open the Key Commands window from the global Windows menu.
- Click Find and type "VS" (without the "").
- You should see the key command "Get complete playlist from VS".
- Click on it.
- Enable "Learn Key".
- Define whatever key you want by pressing it once. (A Function key may be a good choice here).
- Close the Key Commands window.

This key command works when the Arrange window is the top window. When you press the key you have defined, Logic Audio will ask the VS to send it's playlist to Logic.

When you press your defined key, Logic Audio will request the following from the VS:

-The tempo or tempo list of the currently selected song in the VS
- The frame rate of the currently selected song in the VS
- The whole playlist of the currently selected song in the VS. Logic Audio will read the playlist of all 8 (or 16 iwith a VS-1680) tracks of the currently set V-Tracks.

This will take a while. After this is done, you should see all VS tracks in the Arrange window.

Waveform Overview

You will now notice that a small window labeled "Creating overview". It may take a while to finish this for all audio tracks-depending on the length of your song in the VS. Creating the overviews for an average song takes around 10 minutes.

However, you may go on working while Logic Audio is still requesting the overviews. Logic automatically stops reading them when you start playback, and continues reading when you stop playback.

The rate at which the overview data can be transfered is determined by factors beyond Logic's control.

The overviews are saved on your hard drive after they have been completly read. This means, that when you load this VS song into Logic in the future, the overviews do not have to be recreated. Logic creates a directory called "(VS-Files)" on the partition on your drive where the Operating System folder is located. A folder within this directory for each VS song is created. Logic Audio manages this folder automatically.

Refresh Overviews

If you later find that overview data stored on the hard drive does not match what you hear when playing:

- In the main menu, select Windows > Open Audio.
- Select the track files you wish recreate the overview(s) for.
- In the audio window, select File > Refresh overview(s).
The overviews may be displayed incorrectly if you work with the VS without Logic, and later go on working with Logic Audio. There is no way for Logic Audio to know what has changed in such cases, unless you subsequently refresh the overviews.

Editing in the Arrange Window

Editing works on a Cut/Copy/Paste principle.

The Following is possible:

- Moving a region (simply click-hold and move),
- Copying a region - click-hold and move while holding option (Mac) or Ctrl (PC),
Performing any of the above edits will cause a command to automatically be sent via MIDI to the VS, which will then perform the operation. Please note that editing multiple regions at once will take some time to complete in the VS. A small window will show the status of the edit with a progress bar.

If you initiate too many commands at once you may hit the key to "Get complete playlist" to abort. The commands not yet completed are skipped, those already completed are reflected after the playlist is done loading.

The following operations are not possible:

- Changing the length of a region
- Grabbing the left or the right corner of a region to change its beginning or end point.

If you move a region in the Arrange window so that it overlaps another region, the overlapping data from the end of the earlier region will be removed. This cannot be subsequently undone. If you do this, and wish to recover, the only recourse would be to get the playlist from the VS. This would of course discard any other changes made in Logic Audio since the song was last saved on the VS.

The same applies if you copy a region so that it overlaps another region.

The VS does not offer realtime non-destructive file/region based editing: What is gone is gone, so be careful when editing. Therefore, the following cannot be undone in Logic Audio:

It is not possible to delete a region and to undo this afterwards. The only way to get it back is to re-load the song in the VS and perform Get complete Playlist in Logic Audio again.

Itås highly recommended to undo audio editions directly at the Roland VS-not with Logic Audio. Get complete Playlist from VS after the undo operation.

Saving Changes in the VS

Unless you save the song in the VS, the changes are not stored. You can go back to the previous status by reloading the song in the VS and selecting Get complete Playlist from VS in Logic again.

The song in the VS can not be saved by Logic remotely, it can be done from the VS' front panel only.

Saving Changes to the Overview Files

When you select Getting the current playlist and you have edited the current Arrange before, Logic will ask you to save the overview data which also has changed. You should respond:

- Yes, when you are also saving the song in the VS.
- No, when you have re-loaded a previously saved version of your VS song into the VS.
- No, when you have loaded a different song into the VS and you have NOT saved the changed song in the VS before.

Changing a Song in the VS

After changing a song in the VS, you will have to get the complete Playlist from the VS before starting any kind of changes to the arrangement inside Logic.

Effects Control from Logic

In the mixer, accessed by Windows > Open Mixer, you'll find two return objects, called 'Effect 1' and '2'. Under the parameter name 'Inserts', there is a blue field in which you can select one of the effects available on the VS effect processors. Click-hold to select the effect. Double-click the blue insert to open an edit window for the effect's parameters. Each audio channel strip has two Sends (Eff1 and Eff 2, both of them 'post fader'), which define the amount of effect added to each of the channels.

V-Tracks

Logic Audio always reads the playlist from the currently active V-Track in the VS. When you want to see, hear and edit a different V-Track, set this in the VS and get the playlist of the again.

The Regions are named in this manner: "TrackA1-1" for Bank A, Track 1 and V-Track 1; "TrackA4-7" for Bank A, Track 4 and V-Track 7.

V-Track Banks (VS-880EX only)

Currently, only Bank A is read by Logic Audio.

4.1.3

Bugfix (Mac only) + AIFF/WAVE recordings: the audio files were too long after recording, the regions were ok. This is now fixed.
4.1.2

Digidesign Digi001 (Mac only)

Emagic has optimized its support of Direct I/O for the Digi001. Please note: to make use of the Digi001 support, DigiSystem INIT 5.0 is required.

+ There is an individual Environment object for the MIDI out port of the Digi001. In order to create this object, please choose New > Internal > Digi001 MIDI. Any data coming in via the MIDI In of the Digi001 is automatically recognized. You may also use the MIDI ports of the Digi001 via OMS. In the case of MicroLogic you must use OMS, as MicroLogic does not have an environment.

+ Logic Audio Platinum allows you to run up to 64 tracks via the Digi001 depending on the performance of your computer and your hard-drives. Logic Audio Gold offers up to 32 tracks, Silver up to 24 and MicroLogic AV up to 16.

+ When using Logic Audio Platinum and Gold, all inputs and outputs of the Digi001 can be addressed. Logic Audio Silver is capable of addressing a maximum of eight outputs and two inputs, according to its specifications. MicroLogic AV is limited to two inputs and two outputs.

+ It is possible to use Split Stereo files, Interleaved and, of course, Mono files, all simultaneously.

+ Logic's Audio Engine allows the simultaneous playback of 16 and 24 bit files.

+ In Logic you can utilize the internal effects, external Plug-Ins in VST1 and VST2 format and virtual instruments like the Emagic ES1 for playback via the Digi001.

In order to use all 18 in- and outputs of the Digi001, please activate the option "Use 16 (or more) ins and outs" in the menu "Audio > Audio hardware and drivers > Direct I/O". Due to the fact that you can use two ins/two outs maximum with MicroLogic AV and two ins/eight outs of your audio hardware with Logic Audio Silver, this option is only available with Logic Audio Gold and Platinum.

At the first start after a new installation Logic checks all supported hardware drivers. Due to technical reasons it looks for presence of a Digidesign TDM system first. Starting "Launch DAE" will lead to conflicts with Digi001. Please make sure not to activate DAE, activate Direct I/O instead under "Audio > Audio hardware & drivers.

General remarks on Digidesign Direct I/O (Mac only)

+With DigiSystem INIT(TM) 5.0 you can set the I/O buffer size to ".125", which reduces the latency for the input monitoring and for real-time playing of virtual instruments. The downside of this is that the CPU load is increased so it may not be possible to play back as many audio tracks as with larger buffer sizes. Hint: for the Audiomedia III card "0.5" is still the smallest possible value for the I/O buffer size.

+Under "Audio > Audio Preferences > Direct I/OÛ you will now find the button "Hardware Setup". The Hardware Setup allows you to set the different parameters of the different Digidesign cards, such as clock source, input gain etc. The global key command "Audio Hardware Setup" opens the same window without the need to click through the menu.

+ DigiSystem (TM) INIT 5.0 cannot be used with older DAE-Versions; so if you also address your Digidesign Hardware via DAE, please keep the corresponding DigiSystem INIT.

+ Recording problem solved for AMIII.

ES1
+ The response time after editing MIDI sequences addressing the ES1 has been decreased even further.

Rewire
+ Under Rewire the timing and the latency of the virtual sound modules Retro AS-1 and Unity DS-1 have been improved. The CPU load is now slightly higher (Mac only).

VST2.0
+ The keyboard of the virtual sound module Pro-Five by Native Instruments can now be opened and closed. + The response time after editing MIDI sequences addressing a VST 2.0 virtual sound module has been decreased even further.

General Improvements
+ When bouncing, the playback is audible again (Windows only).

+In the Audio > Audio Preferences page, the Recording File Type can now be easily chosen. SDII is the default and the other choices are AIFF and WAV (the latter one not for DAE/TDM or CBX). (Mac only)

+ Changing the source tempo in the Time Machine does not affect the song tempo anymore. When opening the Time Machine, the source tempo will be automatically set to the song tempo.

+ The Key Commands Window offers the following new Key Commands in the section "Various sequence editors":
• "Note Overlap Correction (selected/selected)"
• "Note Force Legato (selected/selected)"
• "Note Overlap Correction for repeated notes".

4.1.1

Version 4.1 offers not only various improvements but also important new features.

- Support of the new ES1 - Emagic Synthesizer One for Logic Audio - for Mac und Windows
- VST2.0 support for Mac and Windows
- Rewire support for Mac and Windows
- Support of the Apple Macintosh G4's Velocity Engine
ES1 support

Logic 4.1 supports the new, optional available ES1 - Emagic Synthesizer One for Logic Audio. With the ES1 Emagic proudly introduces its first proprietary development in the field of virtual instruments. Outfitted with an innovative user interface, the ES1 provides subtractive synthesis that meets the classic analog ideals. It offers everything that made the analog synthesizer so famous: rich basic sound, punchy filters, flexible modulation possibilities and extremely fast envelopes. The ES1 integrates seamlessly within Logic's internal digital mixer; all plug-ins effects can be used and all parameters can be automated. The direct connection with the sequencing engine of the Logic System guarantees unsurpassed precision through sample-accurate timing that is superior to any external MIDI synthesizer.

To use the ES1, version 4.1 features a new category of audio objects in Logic, called "audio instruments". These can have the synthesizer plug-in in their top insert slot. The default song - the song that opens if you move your Autoload away from the Logic folder - has readiliy configured audio instruments with one ES1.

An audio instrument is an audio object (or an audio track in MicroLogic AV) with the parameter "Cha" switched to one of the "Instruments (1-8)". Each audio object can be made an audio instrument by setting this parameter in its object parameter box. You can insert the ES 1 plug-in into an audio object - created by selecting "New > Audio Object" - only after its "Cha" parameter is set to an instrument channel. To create a new audio instrument in MicroLogic AV you simply select "Track > Create Audio Instrument".

VST2.0-Support (Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver only)

Logic Audio 4.1 supports the use of VST 2.0 plug-ins under Mac and Windows. Of course, this means that VST 1 plug-ins are now also supported under Windows. To work with VST plug-ins in Logic Audio, copy the plug-in files to the folder called "VstPlugIns" in the Logic Audio directory. Simply create a folder with this name if one does not already exist.

Like Emagic's ES1, VST2.0 instruments must be inserted in new audio objects, the audio instruments. These support the stereo outputs of the relevant plug-ins. An audio instrument is an audio object that has its "Chan" parameter set to "Instruments (1-8)". In this way, every audio object can be used as an audio instrument, up to the limit of 8 audio instruments. Correspondingly, when choosing "New > Audio object", set "Chan = Instrument" in order to place a VST2.0 instrument in the uppermost insert slot.

Logic now supports programs for VST/VST2.0 plug-ins, if a plug-in provides program memory. You will find a new menu in the head of the plug-in window that displays the currently chosen program ("PROG 01" etc.). Double click on a program name to rename it.

Mac only: "Load Settings" allows you to load Cubase(TM)-format "Effect" and "Bank" plug-in settings into the plug-in's program memory. These particular settings are a part of many plug-ins and can be found in the "VstPlugIns" folder. Hint: Copy or move these settings into the folder "Plug-In Settings" and from there into the folder of the corresponding plug-in in order to have direct access to these settings without having to use the file selector.

Windows only: Version 4.1 also allows the Plug-In enabler to activate and deactivate VST plug-ins. Click on the flip menu in the middle of the Enabler window to switch between both formats. It is possible to apply DirectX and VST plug-ins simultaneously; you do not deactivate one format when you switch to another.

Windows only: Like Logic's own plug-ins, VST plug-ins can also be automated. This type of automation is not possible with DirectShow plug-ins due to technical reasons based on the principle of the DirectShow interface.

Remarks on the use of ES1 and VST2.0 instruments

ES1 offers an opportunity to reduce system load. Please only assign as many voices that you expect to need for a particular task; for example, one voice is usually enough for a bass or snare drum.

Please note that muting an audio instrument track in Arrange does not reduce system load.

When an audio instrument track is selected, it is ready to be played in real-time and consequently produces some system load. Normally Logic releases system resources used by the Audio Engine when the sequencer is stopped. But this is not true if an audio instrument track is selected in Arrange and is therefore available for real-time playing. Selecting a MIDI track or a normal audio track exits this "stand by" mode and releases reserved system resources again when the sequencer is stopped.

At this time audio instruments can only be addressed through corresponding audio instrument tracks in Arrange. At the moment, audio instrument tracks process the sequence parameters Quantize, Transpose or Delay in real-time. All other sequence parameters become effective after they are normalized. Loops and aliases must be converted to "real" copies. If you want to shorten sequences, please divide them with the scissors tool and erase the part you do not need any more. We apologise for the slightly clumsy handling in this case, an update to these features will follow. The reason for this is the totally different internal handling of an audio instrument as compared to external MIDI instruments. The good thing is: the MIDI timing of ES1 is sample accurate.

Windows only: To hear instrument plug-ins like ES1 along with plug-in effects inserted afterwards, LOGIC must be in play mode.

Rewire (Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver only)

Logic now supports Propellerheads' ReWire, a software interface between sequencer/audio applications. ReWire works with following cards/drivers using Logic's internal audio engine:

under MacOS
-Mac AV
-Audiowerk
-1212 I/O
-Direct I/O (Digidesign cards)
-ASIO
-StudI/O
under Windows
- PCAV (MME, ASIO, EASI, DirectSound)
- Audiowerk
Please start Logic first and then start ReWire applications afterwards. Please also see notes regarding this in ReWire read me's. ReWire scans on its own for ReWire compatible applications or system extensions; for example, Propellerheads' ReBirth.

Logic will display the audio returns of ReWire-connected applications as audio objects: You're able to insert plug-ins and create sends to busses on these returns as if on a normal audio track. To use

To use the audio returns of ReWire-connected applications, select an audio object and choose the desired ReWire-audio-return in the flip menu of the "Cha" parameter of the audio object. In this filp menu you will find ReWire channels listed with their names along with the audio tracks, inputs, busses and outputs. ReWire or the application to which the connection belongs generates the names for those channels. The naming of a ReWire channel is not relevant to Logic; for example, if a channel is called "Mix" it has no specific function related to that name as far as Logic is concerned. It is up to you what to do with what channel. If there is no audio object for a ReWire return created in the Environment, no audio is transferred between a ReWire application and Logic. How does this work in practice with, for example, ReBirth? In case of ReBirth, you will find two channels called "Mix L" and "Mix R" within Logic. The two Mix channels return the sum mix of ReBirth. You will also find channels of every individual instrument. When creating an audio object for another channel like, for example, bass drum, you will hear the bass drum only thru that channel, and it is extracted from the mix returns.

In comparison to VST2.0, Rewire has a relatively high MIDI latency due to technical reasons. This is not an issue when using a software like "Rebirth" from Propellerheads with Logic as these are two audio sequencers that are sample-accurately synced via the audio clock. Logic is always Sync master. And as Logic is also always Cycle master, "Skip Cycle" works, too.

The following functions are shared between the applications:
-start/stop,
-repositioning,
-cycle start & end,
-tempo change.
Velocity Engine Support (Apple Macintosh G4 only)

With Version 4.1, the audio mixer of Logic Audio and MicroLogic AV exploits the performance advantages of the new Apple Macintosh G4's Velocity Engine. The Velocity Engine support can be activated or deactivated in real-time by using the key command "Toggle Velocity Engine Support".

General Improvements

+Windows only: Under "Audio Settings" you will now find the parameter "CPU Overload Detection". This offers the choices "Strict" (strict overload judgement as in Version 4.0.4) and "Buffered" (restrained overload judgement).

+Windows only: Under "Audio Hardware and Drivers" you are now able to set values from 1 to 8 for the I/O Buffer Size of the Audiowerk8. The value "8" corresponds to the previous setting : no drop-outs but relatively long fader delays. Smaller buffer sizes can provide shorter fader delays and shorter latency times for audio instruments. In these cases, however, the risk of drop-outs with higher system loads is correspondingly higher.

+Muted sequences and folders now have a green border.

+Tape delay now works in stereo.

+You will now find key commands for "Change Background" as well as all Hyperdraw key commands under "Various Windows" in the key command window. They can also be used in the Arrange, Matrix and Score windows.

+In exponential operations transformers now react differently on received meta-events. When a value of an event is changed (column -2-) following values will be produced:
A meta-event with value 64 (middle position) produces an operation with exponent value 0.0000.
A meta-event with value 0 produces an operation with exponent value -3.0208.
A meta-event with value 127 produces an operation with exponent value +2.9736.
+Editing of SysEx events in Event Editor and in SysEx faders has been improved. When SysEx events are displayed in ASCII code a double click on a SysEx byte with command key (Mac) or a right mouse click (Windows) will open a little text editor.

+A double stop command now sets the song back to the beginning also in MMC mode.

4.0.7 (Mac only)

The subrelease Logic Audio 4.0.7 for Macintosh eliminates the following misbehaviour: After audio recording, the song settings could be changed unexpectedly. This problem was specific to Logic Audio Platinum 4.0.6 and Logic Audio Silver, Gold and Platinum 4.0.5, Macintosh versions only. Version 4.0.5 was released on the 3rd of November. We recommend that users update these versions to 4.0.7.

4.0.6 (Mac only)

Version 4.0.6 now supports the Velocity Engine, also known as AltiVech, of the new G4 CPU.

Velocity Engine
The Velocity Engine of the G4 Macs is supported in version 4.0.6 by the internal Logic mixing desk, which increases the number of available audio channels. Emagic is proud to be one of the first audio application vendors to bring the full power of the G4 computers to its customers.

On G4 Macs the Logic support of the Velocity Engine will be automatically enabled, when opening Logic Audio 4.0.6. You may switch the Velocity Engine support off and on using the Key Command "Toggle Velocity Engine support". Next time you boot Logic Audio, the Velocity Engine support will be activated again. It is obvious that the Velocity Engine support is not available on other computers than the G4.

User Interface Language
One new user interface languages is now available: Italian. You can switch languages in the window Options > Settings > Display Preferences. The setting "Default Language" uses the language of your keyboard layout. You need to quit and re-launch Logic to activate the change.

4.0.5 (Mac only)

Version 4.0.5 contains most importantly improvements when using a Unitor8 or an AMT8s via USB.

+ Timing has been improved when using an UNITOR8 or an AMT8 on the USB-Port. In previous versions delays were possible during high DSP load.

+ The AMT technology is now used when using UNITOR8 or AMT8 on the USB Port. You will find the corresponding checkbox in the settings page "MIDI Interface Communication".

+ The contents of audio regions is now displayed correctly in high zoom settings on setups with two monitors.

+ Logic Audio now supports settings files as used by some VST Plug-Ins, e.g. Spark FXMachine.

4.0.4

Version 4.0.4 offers extended Yamaha DSP Factory support and other improvements. Following this text you'll also find details regarding new features found in earlier 4.0 sub-releases.

DSP-Factory

Native Plug-Ins
It is now possible to use native internal plug-ins, DirectX plug-ins (Windows) or VST plug-ins (Mac) together with the effects of the DS2416 card. The native plug-ins can only be used:
a) on tracks
b) before the effects of the DS2416 card.
These restrictions have technical reasons (i.e. signals can only be routed once from the CPU to the card). If you insert a native plug-in after a DS2416 effect, Logic automatically moves the native plug-in before the first DS2416 effect.
The maximum number of inserts has been increased to allow four native plug-ins per track.

Routing Presets
The DS2416 Routing window allows you to save and open all settings as a setting file. After saving a setting, it can be accessed in the preset menu without having to open a file selector box. In order to do this Logic creates a folder named "DS2416 Settings" inside the Logic Audio application folder.

Windows

+ The global preference "Hide windows of inactive songs" is available again.

Bugfixes/Improvements

+ Matrix editor with activated MIDI Out button: clicked notes were accidentally played on a wrong MIDI channel.
+ Transport windows were not saved with the screenset in some cases.
+ AutoLink with SoundDiver improved (Scan function via USB; error message after disabling AutoLinkÖ)
+ Many improvements in details and special situations.

4.0.1

In addition to direct communication with Emagic’s USB MIDI interfaces, Version 4.0.1 offers a range of detailed improvements and even better overall performance.

Windows-User: Version 4.0.1 for Windows was not released. The features described below were released with version 4.0.2/4.0.3.

New Functions

Windows and MacOS

Matrix Editor: Show selected sequences only

If the Matrix editor is in Multi Sequence Editing mode, there is a new option in the View menu: "Show selected Sequences only". Only selected sequences will be displayed when this option is chosen (instead of all sequences).

Audio Level Meters

- The VU meters can now be set to display "Pre Fader". The option "Pre-Fader Metering" in the global "Audio" menu works on all audio tracks.

- There are now input level meters if using an ASIO driver.

Sample Editor: Level values in dB

The dialog window that contains the "Change Gain" function and "Settings…" (for Normalize value) now also offers level values in "dB", in addition to "%".

Sample Editor: Monitoring controls

There are now new monitoring controls that can be accessed via Key Commands:

- Play/Stop Region plays the region independently of the current selection.

- Play/Stop Region to Anchor plays from Start up to the Anchor.

- Play/Stop Region from Anchor plays from Anchor up to the Region End.

Plug-Ins

Some plug-ins now have additional parameters which are only visible in the controls view (not yet in the graphical editor surface):

Phaser

"Mix". Negative Values = phase inverted mix of effect and direct signal.

GoldVerb / PlatinumVerb

"Diffusion" of the reverb tail.

SilverVerb

"Densitiy/Time" controls the density of early reflections and the reverb time.

Autofilter

You can lower the "Volume" (up to 50 dB); e.g. to compensate a higher level when using distortion.

Oscillator

The Frequency can now either be adjusted in Hz or as "Note" and "Octave" with variable tuning "tune". You can switch between both modes using "Freq. Source".

MacOS

Support for AMT8 and Unitor8

Emagics new MIDI interfaces, AMT8 and Unitor8 are now also supported directly when using USB. If you are using USB, you can plug them in and out even while Logic is running (hot plugging).

MIDI Interface Communication

Three MIDI interface systems can now be selected via the page Options > Settings > MIDI Interface Communication: Connection 1-3. The port can be slected for every connection: Modem, Printer, USB or "off". In older versions, Connection 1 was permanently assigned to the modem port and Connection 2 was permanently assigned to the printer port. These assignments are now variable: If you change your computer set-up, simply select the appropriate connection and all MIDI devices will then be correctly reassigned and you don´t have to change the settings of (multi-) instruments in any of your songs. For example, if you were previously using the modem port, and have now switched to a USB computer, simply select "USB" under "Connection 1".

There is now a new entry "Port" in the Instrument Parameter Box (Arrange or Environment window). The port number can be entered by clicking in the right side of the parameter field. Each of the three connections can provide up to 64 ports. Therefore, the number of independently addressable MIDI channels is now 3072. Please write to us if you wish to work with more than 24 Unitor8, AMT8 or Unitor8 interfaces on the same computer… The connection can be switched with one click in the left side of the parameter field.

TDM Plug-Ins: Sidechains

In applicable TDM plug-ins, e.g. Compressors, Noise Gates, Vocoders etc, you can now select a different source for the side chain input (or key input). You can choose from all tracks, busses, inputs or outputs.

The Sidechains were already mentioned in the 4.0 addendum but not yet implemented. We apologize for this oversight.

Playback Delay

The new Playback Delay parameter is separately adjustable for every audio driver (in sample word units from -999 to 999).

Improvements

• We have improved the performance of the Emagic Audio Engine even further.

• MacOS Sample Editor: It is now possible to scroll the menus "Premiere" and "Audio Suite" if there are too many menu entries (you need MacOS 8.5 or higher).

• Pasting or loading Plug-In settings on Plug-Ins that are located on Busses does not affect the setting of the "Mix" parameter anymore. Settings which were created with Plug-Ins on Tracks with certain "Mix" settings can now be used on Busses without re-adjusting "Mix" to 100% manually (which is usually the required "Mix" value on Busses).

• The parameters Vel, Dyn and Trp are now handled intelligently when merging sequences (also with glue tool): Different values will be normalized before merging. Identical settings will be preserved in the merged sequence.

• The Track Mixer displays faders with controllers #10, 71, 72, 73 and 74 as "centered" (neutral value in the middle).

MacOS

• Improved details when using OMS (port settings, startup routine…)

• Improved performance when using ASIO drivers.

• It was always possible to use different paths for different file selector boxes (e.g. on dialogs like Open Song, Add Audio File, Set Record Path, Load/Save Plug-In Settings…). This ability is now independent from the settings of the control panel "General Controls".

Bugfixes

• Sending MIDI clock in cycle mode could cause external drum computers to run out of sync.

• Certain bugs fixed with imported MIDI files, MicroLogic or Notator Atari songs.

• Further problems in special situations fixed.

Windows

• DSP-Factory (DS2416): The 16/24 bit recording switch didn´t work.

• The free disk space under Windows 98 was viewed as 2 GB maximum, even if there was more free space.

• AVI: SMPTE offset didn´t work. Exact frame positioning is now possible.

• Adding or removing DirectX plug-ins during playback could cause system overload.

• DirectSound: Audio/MIDI synchronization didn´t work in some situations.

MacOS

• In certain cases the Audio window and TDM Plug-In windows changed colors randomly.

• If launching an audio driver at runtime ("Try (Re)Launch") VST plug-ins were not loaded and the CBX driver could only be started once.

• Sonorus StudI/O: The left and right channels of the S/P-DIF input were swapped.

• Problems with the Spectral Gate plug-in under System 8.0 in certain situations.

• Universal Track mode: If two extreme left/right panned mono tracks were routed to a stereo bus it was sometimes impossible to hear the right track.

• 68k version: File > Import menu didn´t work.
