Soundcraft Spirit Studio LC (1994) 32 channel 8 buss

Each channel has a Flip switch, so that you can move from recording to remixing without repatching; during recording, the mixer input feeds into the main channel path, with the off-tape signal being fed into the monitor path. On mixdown, this is reversed so that the tape machine feeds through the main signal path and the monitor path is fed from the channel's line input.

32 track version is 55" wide by 25" deep.

SOUNDCRAFT SPIRIT STUDIO LC 24:8:2 £2937.50

Highly-featured budget 8-bus recording console

Reviewed in SOS April '94

The LC is essentially an 8-bus recording console available in three fixed-frame sizes: 16, 24 or 32. The routing follows the familiar split system, with the Group faders at the right of the console and the in-line monitor controls in the channel strips. The available line inputs may be doubled at mixdown by using the monitor channels as additional line ins, and the LC has seven additional stereo inputs for use as returns or further line inputs. In fact, with every option utilised, the 32-channel model can be persuaded to mix a maximum of 82 inputs.

Physically, the LC is relatively compact and flat-topped, with connections mounted on the back panel. All channels have balanced mic and balanced line inputs, and the mic inputs have individually switchable 48V phantom powering. Six Aux sends are provided, with three dedicated stereo returns. The main signal path is equipped with PFL/Solo, and the monitor path has PFL only. EQ is 3-band, with swept mid and low sections, plus a conventional shelving hi control operating at 12kHz. All three bands have a range of plus or minus 15dB. There is no way to share the EQ with the monitor path, but there is an EQ cut switch and a switchable 100Hz bass roll-off filter. Other features include a Group/Direct tape out on each channel, an additional submix input for use with an external mixer, insert points on all channels, groups and both main stereo and submix outputs, line-up oscillator and talkback system and switchable levels for use with +4dBu or -10dBV multitrack machines.

Small whinges include the fact that the control room headphones cut off the monitors and the fact that the EQ is only 3-band and cannot be split or switched to the monitor inputs. Points in the LC's favour include its clean signal path, overall sound quality, large number of available inputs and easy to follow but very flexible routing and monitoring systems. Eminently suitable for 8-, 16- or even 24-track recording.
