Cakewalk / Cakewalk Instrument files, on Linux

I have a handful of MIDI hardware, that can be a pain to pair with many DAWs. The issue is selecting the specific patch/bank you want, from within the DAW (if you even can). You can use midi events,, to trigger a program change. But it is just nice when you have your hardware selection, right in the DAW. Cakewalk is a King among DAWs, here.

Some DAWs offer a collection of popular hardware instrument files. With most, you can make your own. Since I've been a long time Cakewalk fan, I have a collection of it's instrument files (many custom). This is one of the reasons why Linux is not very appealing to me.  Ardour has it's own instrument files (midnam), and you can find a collection of them here and there. But I was glad to find Qtractor has native support for Cakewalk instrument files. It's a nice quick'n'easy option, if you want to try that gear in a Linux environment.

I does stink, that Qtractor doesn't have automation for MIDI CC. But it does have the option to do a "poor man's" automation, via the MIDI editor. Right under the midi note matrix, where note velocity is commonly found, you can select the MIDI control you want to automate. The bummer is that it automates the same as you would with note velocity (probably not as smooth). I'm using an older version, so it is possible that CC automation has been added. Note: there are two icons for drawing , in the midi editor. They are both pencil icons. But the one with a wave behind it is ideal for editing the CC area.

Anyway, as a long time Cakewalk user, this was a cool discovery.

midi - Serial (PC) / Serial Drivers

Hi Everyone.

New here. I hope this is in the right place. Trying to pass on what little I've learned.

Put together a Windows 95 laptop (Gateway 2000 Liberty) and I am using it to control my JV-1010, 05R/W, and CBX-K1G.

Besides a Korg and Roland Editor, I also have Voyerta MIDI Orchestrater and XG works installed.

Installed the Yamaha driver, tested, all good. Installed the Korg driver, and it seemed to fight the Yamaha driver. Installed the Roland driver, and all hell broke loose. Had to re-instyall windows. Com 1 was locked, and nothing could access it.

After installing a SS drivew (HDD died during all this), I looked at the pinouts for the adapter cables carefully. Nothing out of place there.

Then, I got to thinking (oh oh). Isn't a serial MIDI driver a serical MIDI driver ? Why would they be manufacturer specific ?

Os, to test my hypotheses, I installed only the Yamaha Serial MIDI driver. And, low and behold, all three synths respond using just the one driver !

Found what I was looking for, in DiscoDSP Highlife v1.3. It is a VSTi sampler, too. Pretty light on resources. But I don't think in has it's own pitch parameter. It has something like a pitch wheel, but it behaves like a midi pitch wheel (which can be nice). But for the finer VST parameter pitch control, I'll have to use an added VST FX.

I was starting to think bloaty and newer were my only options. Tal Sampler, for example. Kontakt can do it, but though MIDI CC. And Kontakt is a little heavy. It isn't the most fluid UI either.

@Mr_Mojo_Risin, tried loading your PN-JV80-07 .sysex file into the JV-880 and getting a "MIDI: Data card not ready" message as I obviously don't own a data card. Also, trying to import in SoundDiver crashes the app unfortunately. Any way you or someone else can transfer to your device's internal memory and then dump the sysex file and re-upload?

Software Samplers / Basic VSTi sampler, loop start/end automation (found)

I have a plenty of samplers, but I'm looking for a basic "light" sampler. Similar to the default sampler tool in FLStudio or LMMS. None of the ones I have offer "complete"automation parameters, for loop editing. Everything is there for filters, lfos, etc. Some even include automation for loop direction, ping-pong, etc. Kontakt (and similar) is a little heavy, for just one sample.

Something older would be better. 2015+ VST/i often run too heavy; even if they are a light plugin, for the day.

You can use multidisk to create an virtual partition, authorise it, then copy the virtual partition, and then deauthorise  the copied partition....

I'm not sure if you can make a copy of the authorisation disk and then restore an authorisation to it with the above technique, but you can certainly copy the authorised multidisk partition file and post it here...

Hey hey, long time. I landed a huge collection of Opcode Vision floppies and manuals. Some of them sadly have no authorizations left. But some do; mainly 1.4 and 2.0.3 (or 2.0..

I just started experimenting with this process again, tonight. I actually managed to do this exactly; I installed the 2.0.3 version onto my Mac, used an old patcher I have and it restored the authorization back onto the Master disk and the program runs fine (like it's still authorized).
I haven't found a way to do it for the 1.4 version, but I might if I keep trucking!

Sidenote, I've made various attempts at copying/duplicating an original Master Floppy (with auths) and it is a more complex process like we've discussed before...
