DX5 is a 32-voice polyphonic bitimbral synthesizer allowing for 2 simultaneous patches. LFO section features Sine/Square/Tri/SAW up/SAW Down/Random waveforms. VCA has 6 envelope generators each of which has 8 parameters. There’s no effects section.

It lacks the wood-panel case of DX1 and features a 76-note velocity keyboard with aftertouch (not polyphonic though comparing to DX1) which delivers 64 performances, 64 patches (32 ROM and 32 RAM).

DX5 seems to be the solution for those who couldn’t afford DX1 when DX7 wasn’t released yet. 64 performance memories can be stored in a cartridge (while DX7 offers only one manual performance memory).

The sounds of the digital synthesizer are still lively and as quality as in DX1. The layout in DX5 is more compressed which is good for programming – a never-easy part of DX instruments.
