Cleaning up the factory and its always remarkable what we dig up - for those of you that still remember real serial ports on Mac computers you needed a 9 pin RS-422 (I think that's right) Serial to MIDI adapter. There were many ill-fated, overpriced and hopelessly under-specified multi-port devices that (in theory) provided lots of MIDI I/O ports off a single MAC Serial bus. We purchased all of them and no, they didn't work. The only real solution for tight timing was a single MidiMan MIDI I/O running off its own Mac Serial Port. Most Macs only had maybe two from memory which meant you needed one of these:

If you could afford a pair of these beautiful PCI Cards and then the matching 8 x MidiMan single I/O Interfaces you had the makings of a blisteringly tight MIDI DAW production system.
And then along came USB and the death of the legacy serial port.......
And yes, we have been obsessed for a very long time

This file is required for 1MHz compatibilty with the Megawolf cards. Requires FreeMID 1.38.
Copy this file to the FreeMIDI folder within the System Folder.
Those of you with new blue Macs will be happy to know that MOTU has officially approved several of their 1 MHz interfaces for use with the Megawolf 2 and 4 port PCI serial cards. The FastLane, Micro Express, Express XT, and MTP AV (1MHz) are all now approved for use. MTPAV fast mode and the MTP II fast mode were approved several weeks ago. The DTP is not officially approved, however, our contacts at MOTU say they “should” work fine.

Q: re: the Megawolf Romulus / Megawolf Remus cards support of OMS
A: While Opcode (creators of OMS) do not support the megawolf Romulus/Remus card, There is OMS compatibility from Freemidi.
(Opcode was on its way out of business at the time of the release of the megawolf cards
they probably would have supported it had they stayed around, but fortunately MOTU was still very much alive + kicking, and they apparently updated their software to include compatibility for Opcode OMS! they kind of had to do this because OMS was more universally used by music applications than freemidi and OMS was endorsed by Apple)
(as of version 1.4) FreeMIDI has expanded compatibilty with OMS by adding the option "use OMS when available". OMS is used in the FreeMIDI shell.
When using the Romulus/Remus card with MIDI software which requires OMS,
download Megawolf's most recent freeMIDI driver.
it contains files that give OMS access to the card.
You can find this at megawolf.com it also has README files with instructions.

Romulus/4 and Remus/2 are inexpensive PCI cards that can add two or four addtional serial ports to your PCI Power PC Macintosh or compatible. Custom UART’s with ample buffering ensure minimal loading of your Macintosh while supporting serial data rates up to 921,600 baud per port. Romulus or Remus are ideal for adding additional serial devices such as modems, MIDI,PDA’s, graphic tablets, label printers, cameras, serial scanners, etc. to your PCI Macintosh. Unlike serial “switchers,” Romulus and Remus ports can all run simultaneously. They are fully compatible with all PCI Macintoshes.
MegaWolf is a leader in Macintosh PCI serial expansion products, having released its "Fenris" line of expandable multiport PCI serial cards in the first quarter of 1996. Rufus, an 8 port PCI card was released in October 1996.
