i have read that this is possible providing you use a mid-2007 imac to format/install the partition

but im curious if its also possible to do this without a mid-2007 imac (as i dont have one of these machines)

there are two updates on this page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1599

This update is for 20-inch and 24-inch Mid 2007 iMac computers with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics running Mac OS X v10.4.10 with or later iMac Software Update 1.2.1 (Tiger) or Mac OS X v10.5 with iMac Software Update 1.3 (Leopard) installed.

the 2008 imac 2.8ghz machine that i have
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.8-24-inch-aluminum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
has this exact video card "Ati Radeon 2600 PRO"

Quote
Radeon HD 2600 PRO    VRAM Type:    GDDR3
Details:    ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor -- using PCI Express -- with 256 MB of GDDR3 video memory

the two updates are:
iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0    6
iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3

the efi firmware update:

After the firmware is successfully applied to your Mac, your Boot ROM Version will be:

IM71.007A.B03

You can confirm the version of the BootROM installed on your computer using System Profiler.

is this firmware installable onto my 2008 imac.. or will it not allow me to do the update?
and if i do the update, will this enable the installation of mac os tiger (intel) from a commercial dvd?

the page goes on to explain u can restore your original firmware using a firmware restoratin cd creatable on any powerpc or intell mac

SUCCESS!!
i've succeeded in installing this on my early 2008 2.8ghz imac 24"!!
let me share with you how this was accomplished as it was something i was trying to do for the last few years!
-download this onto a snow leopard or leopard mac
-convert this 10.4.4 install dvd to read/write with disk utility
-opened up /system/installation/packages folder and then right click "osInstall.pkg" and reveal "package contents"
-drag osinstall.dist file to textedit) and search for "imac4,1"and change any occurrence of "imac4,1" to match your target machine. I changed that to imac8,1 which is what my imac is.
-plug in a firewire or usb external drive reformat & REPARITION ensuring that it was in GUIID partition type (mac intel bootable requirement) if its already in GUID partition type then you dont need to reformat but reformatting is a safe way to ensure a clean filesystem
-run the installer + select the usb or firewire drive and unchecked all the extra stuff under "Customize" so it doesnt prompt u for "disc 2"
-download the combo update for 10.4.11 *intel* and run it, targetting the external drive
-go to startup preferences BOOM theres my intel 10.4.11 disk! restart + bam! TIGER on 2008 imac!!
you are now free to clone this usb drive to a partition on your imac's internal drive!!
