ï Many of you will have noticed that Opcode interfaces suddenly stopped working under Windows 98SE/ME. However some industrious types have come up with a few solutions that may be of use.
1. Turn off ACPI
Most PC BIOS setting allow you to disable ACPI (a power rmanagement feature of Windows). Generally this simple fix will enable your interface once more.
-Enter the BIOS on bootup - usually by hitting [delete] or a fuction key on startup. Your PC will show a line on bootup saying something like "Press Delete to enter Setup"
Once you are in the BIOS the setting varies from machine to machine. On my PC (Award BIOS) I chose the "Power Management Setup" Menu. Then there is an option for ACPI Function enable/disable. Turn it off and reboot - chance are you will be up and running .
-Some PC owners will find they cannot disable ACPI in the BIOS. This is where you have to get quite a bit more involved...
The following two methods have been emailed to me - I haven't tried them so it's at your own risk ! Worst case scenario you'll have to reinstall Windows but this is unlikely.
Credit to Robert and Jupiter for the tips !
2. Manual alteration of Power Management
-Run regedit ( start menu > run >type "regedit")
-go in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VCOMM.
-At your right look for the EnablePowerManagement line, you will see a value of 01 00 00 00 which is for on select the first digit and key in 00 00 00 00 which is for off.
-Close regedit and shut down the computer and interface for a while for a cold boot.
-Restart the computer and interface and you should be able to see it work.
If you still have problems try this also: go in windows/system run MKcompat.exe in file menu/choose program choose 64x.exe.(or whatever interface you have) then go in file/advance options check the delay com handshake box, save, reboot. So i hope it will solve your problems as it solve mine. Spread the good news and have a laugh at the face of theses opcode/gibson guys!
3. System Tweakery
-Load your win9x cd and extract the following files from cab 50 to BOTH: c\windows\system\ and... c\windows\system\vmm32\
The files to extract: vcomm.vxd, vdmad.vxd, configmg.vxd, vdd.vxd, vmouse.vxd, ntkern.vxd, vflatd.vxd,
Normally these files can be found on the win98 cd inside cab50 (depends on which version you have...just check the other cabs until you find the files). The files above all seems to have been replaced by vmm32.dll in a win98SE system. !!!! NEVER EVER DELETE THE VMM32.DLL!!!! You dont want to reinstall your computer....
Hope One of the Above Helps !!
