I once had to build up a 486 because the software (SamplevisionDOS) that would get the sample data out of my S-700 (http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?topic=1139.0) over the MIDI cable, required an MPU-401 sound card and run in s DOS environment. 401 emulation didn't count in this case - had to be 401 in hardware. I believe it was an olf 8 bit SoundBlaster that did the trick.
