8-bus recording console with MIDI muting

Reviewed in SOS May '93 and RM April '93

Another contender in the '8-bus with MIDI muting' console market, the P7 comes as a 16:8:2 format, to which 8-channel expander modules may be fitted, up to a maximum of 40 channels. In-line monitoring, combined with split routing, makes the console easy to understand, while the integral MIDI muting system uses soft switching to avoid clicks when the mutes are turned on or off. The onboard system allows the user to create and step through 100 'scenes', whereas use with an external MIDI sequencer provides greater scope for more complex MIDI operations and mix editing. A novel system outputs mute data as controller dumps, which are recorded to the sequencer along with the more usual note data. This means that if the mix is started part-way through, the correct mute status is restored almost immediately.

The dual-path channel strip features a 4-band equaliser with sweep mid, which may be split to serve both the main and monitor paths if required. There are six aux send controls, three dedicated to the input channel, one to the monitor channel, and one pair switchable between either. Aux 1-4 are post fade, while 5 and 6 are pre-fade. There are four stereo aux returns with 2-band EQ, and insert points on the channels, the groups and the stereo masters. The usual group/direct routing is employed, and there is an integral Talkback mic and a test-tone oscillator.

This is a flexible, easy to use console with a musical-sounding EQ, good overall sonic performance, and an effective MIDI muting system.
