I reinstalled Cubase with AM III-specific drivers (NOT supplied by Steinberg OR Digidesign!!! both attached to e-mail these fine gents sent) ready for combat. When I finally got in there again... BANG! Cubase was setup for Audiomedia III and perfectly functional simultaneous record and playback--which I tested and found to be of astounding state-of-the-art sound reproduction.
For those of you considering the AM III card, MAKE SURE YOU obtain DRIVER zip from the Digidesign website!!! You will have to reinstall Cubase with the specific drivers in your C:/windows/system directory. The wave driver is a piece of sh%& and has the equivalent functionality of an Aptiva M-Wave card!!!

The AM3 Can do wave out if you installed it. Go to Control =
Panel->Multimedia, then
click on wave devices, and then click on each device and hit properties, =
then hit disable
or remove..
