IATKOS Y "Basic Information":
Basic Information
- iATKOS Y is the Yosemite version of the OSX86 installer releases of iATKOS team.
The system version of the latest revision of iATKOS Y is Mac OS X 10.10.3.
We announced it on Feb. 2015 and released it on March 2015.
- iATKOS Y is a 7.8GB hybrid multi-partition dmg image file and it can only be installed using 8GB or bigger USB Flash Stick/HDD.
You will have to restore the iATKOS Y installer dmg image file to your target USB Flash Stick/HDD by following the instructions and boot with the USB device to install the system.
- iATKOS Y is both for Real Macs and PC's.
- iATKOS Y dmg image includes 3 bootloader options to boot the iATKOS Y USB installer on your PC.
You can boot iATKOS Y USB installer with Clover UEFI, Clover Legacy, Chameleon Legacy bootloaders of your choice and you can install any of them to your target computer.
Clover version is 2k r3201, Chameleon version is 2.3 r2625.
This release is prepared to support wider range of computers by its hybrid multi-boot structure.
- For Macs, you can boot with the iATKOS Y USB by selecting it on the boot device selection screen.
Press and hold 'alt/option' key after pressing the Power button of your Mac until the boot devices menu comes up.
- iATKOS Y is designed only for Native Installation.
No Virtual Machine installations (Virtual Box/VMWare/Parallels etc.)
- Easy installation on Software RAID volumes. No additional user actions needed.
- Network, Sound, Graphics, SATA/IDE and some other devices will be auto-detected and mostly auto-configured according to your hardware setup.
- iATKOS Y is designed for Clean installation.
You can migrate your Data/Accounts/Applications from another system using Migration Assistant after installation.
- Using software updater to apply main system updates just like Real Macs is possible using iATKOS Y on most of the compatible computers.
- Default Yosemite setting which shares your search terms you entered on Spotlight and Safari to Apple's and Microsoft's servers is disabled on iATKOS Y. Because, we think this is sort of a security breach, even for personal use.
You can turn on the option anytime if you want your Spotlight and Safari search results to become more specific for your location and your needs.
- Like the previous iATKOS releases, iATKOS Y is designed to run better on more compatible computers because of its original/vanilla/retail base system.
- UEFI/Legacy multi-boot operations (Windows 7, Windows 8, Linux) are easier.
- Wide range of options to make basic hardware work.

You may need to know about the details of your computer before attempting to install this system. Get your hardware details and compare the components with the list below.
To get your hardware details, you can;
- Install hwinfo64/32 on Windows and use it to export the hardware information (.txt, .htm or .log file).
- Fire up a Linux Live CD and boot from it (ie. GParted Live CD, Ubuntu Live CD). Create lshw dump which includes detailed hardware information.
- For OS X, download and run
Processor (CPU):
- 1st, 2nd (SandyBridge), 3rd (IvyBridge), 4th generation (Haswell) and 5th generation (Broadwell) Intel Core i series processors are supported including 2011 socket SandyBridge-E/EN/EP, IvyBridge-E/EN/EP and Haswell-E/EN/EP (2011-v3) Core i7/Xeon cpus.
Simply, Core2Duo / Pentium Dual-Core / Core2Quad / 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Generation Core i3, i5, i7, Pentium / Core i7 Sandy-E Ivy-E Haswell-E series (2011-v1/2/3 socket) / Xeon 3xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx, E3, E5, E7 processors are supported.
- AMD processors are not supported.
- Most of UEFI/Non-UEFI Intel chipset motherboards are supported.
Simply, chipsets from 945G to C6xx are supported. Common chips are 945, 965, 975, G31, P35, G41, G43, P43, P45, P55, H55, HM55, H61, HM65, HM67, QM67, H67, P67, Z68, Z77, H77, HM77, QM77, QS77, H81, H87, Z87, HM87, HM97, QM87, Z97, X58, X79, X99 and C6xx. South bridges from ICH5 to newest Intel 9 Series are supported. (ICH5-6-7-8-9-10, 5-6-7-8-9 Series)
- Besides the main chipset model, a motherboard has many components. Every component itself may or may not be compatible with Mac OS X. Also, BIOS of the motherboard may be problematic for this OS. Because of these reasons, some motherboards will not be able to run this OS easily, they might need hard efforts in order you to make it work and some of them will never run it. Search google and try it on your computer. If a hardware is compatible with OSX86, then it is compatible with iATKOS, simple as this.
Graphics (GPU):
- Intel HD Graphics (Arrandale Mobile), HD 3000 (Sandy Bridge), HD 4000 (Ivy Bridge), HD 5000 (Haswell) and HD 6000 (Broadwell) are supported, the rest are not.
HD 5000 (Haswell) series graphics: HD 4200, HD 4400, HD 4600, HD 5000, HD 5100 (Iris) and HD 5200 (Iris Pro).
HD 6000 (Broadwell) series graphics: HD 5300, HD 5500, HD 5600, HD 6000, HD 6100 (Iris) and HD 6200 (Iris Pro).
Most of them will work and some of them will need a bit more effort.
- NVIDIA graphics chips from G80 core to the newest Maxwell series are supported on 10.10.x. This does not mean that all of them will work but most of them will work with iATKOS Y.
>> Optimus technology (which is used on some of Intel/NVIDIA dual gpu laptop computers) is not supported by Mac OS X.
Apple computers use a different method for graphics switching. If you have the setting on your Optimus Laptop's BIOS menu to turn of Optimus, then you might have a chance to make your NVIDIA Mobile work. Otherwise you will have to use your Intel Graphics.
PS: Do not underestimate the power of Intel HD 3000/4000/5000 and 6000 graphics, they can beat most of the NVIDIA/ATI mobility, NVIDIA/ATI Mobility gpus are overrated.
Simply, NVIDIA 8xxx / 9xxx / 1xx / 2xx / 3xx / 4xx / 5xx / 6xx / 7xx / 8xx / 9xx, TI series and many Quadro cards are supported.
- About ATI, Mac OS X 10.10.x and Clover bootloader gives us more hope and less pain about ATI support.
Simply, ATI 7xxx/6xxx/5xxx/4xxx R7/R9 chipsets are supported but of course still more pain and less success comparing with nvidia.
iATKOS Y has some options for ATI's including device_id injection and framebuffer override packages to make more of the ATI cards work with less pain. Still, many of the users may have to take some additional steps to use their ATI cards after installation.
Network Devices:
- Common wired and wireless network devices that are auto-detected by iATKOS Y.
There are incompatible/problematic chips but most of them will work OOB with iATKOS Y.
- Intel Gigabit and Intel Pro/100
- Realtek RTL8111, 8168, 8101E, 8102E, 8131E, 8169, 8110SC, 8169SC
- Atheros AR8121, 8113, 8114, 8131, 8151, 8161, 8171, 8132, 8152, 8162, 8172, e2200/e2201/e2205 (killer)
- Broadcom BCM5722, 5752, 5754, 5754M, 5755, 5755M, 5761, 5761e, 57780, 57781, 57785, 5784M, 5787, 5787M, 5906, 5906M, 57788, 5784M
- Marvell 88E8035, 88E8036, 88E8038, 88E8039, 88E8056, 88E8001
Wireless: Some chips (ie. Atheros ar5008, Broadcom BCM4311) are natively supported by OS X. So, this is not the complete wifi support list of OS X.
- Atheros AR9285, 9287, 9227
- Broadcom BCM4312, 4321, 4322, 43224, 43225, 43227, 43228, 4352 (Some of these broadcom chips need rebranding in order to work on OS X.)
- Recommended minimum amount of RAM is 2GB.
- Sound device is auto-detected by iATKOS Y and nearly all of the onboard sound devices are supported.
Disk Space:
- Recommended minimum amount of disk space for installation is 20GB.
(Software RAID installation is supported and all operations are automated for all of the bootloaders.)
Mostly, compatibility of a hardware can be defined by its chipset and device id, but this is not a rule. Motherboards/VGA cards/other computers parts with same chipsets and device ids of different brands may have differences that can result with incompatibility.
Therefore > Search and read before asking "Will iATKOS Y work on this hardware/computer?"
If a hardware is absolutely not compatible with OSX86 10.10.3 (i.e. Broadcom BCM4313, Atheros AR5007, etc.), then it is also not compatible with iATKOS Y.

- iATKOS Y is an OSX86/OS X installer release designed for 64-bit Intel CPU PC's and Apple Mac computers.
- iATKOS Y includes Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 (Build 14D131).
- iATKOS Y USB installer can be booted/installed both in UEFI and Legacy mode on compatible PC's.
Clover UEFI/Legacy v2.3 r3201
Chameleon v2.3 r2625
- iATKOS Y USB installer can be booted directly on real Mac computers.
- Read the instalation steps carefully and if something goes wrong, don't panic. Scroll down to the troubleshooting guide. Make sure you have read/applied the steps before asking.
Preparing USB Installation Media:
Before that, check the md5 of the Y.dmg file that you downloaded and make sure that the md5 checksum matches the one you have inside the md5.txt file. If not, then you have a faulty iATKOS Y dmg image file.
Mac OS X:
- Insert a USB flash/hdd (minimum 8GB in size) and erase it with Disk Utility using any format. (You can also rename)
- Double click "Restore_Y_to_USB.pkg", select the USB flash/hdd you erased as target and click install.
It will restore the iATKOS Y dmg image to your USB device.
- Use Transmac to restore the iATKOS Y dmg file to your USB device. It will also take long to finish the restore operation, raw write to USB takes long on any platform.
- Attach the dmg image file and unmount the volumes of the image.
- Attach your target USB Flash/HDD and unmount the volumes of USB.
- Use dd for raw write operation. Source is the attached image (/dev/sdX) with bs=1m option, target is your target USB device (/dev/sdY). ie. >> dd if=/dev/sdc of=/dev/sdd bs=1m
It can take up to 200 minutes according to your hardware, raw write to USB takes long on any platform.
If you use a fast USB3 flash drive on a USB3 port, it will be faster. Mine restores in 5 minutes.

Before Installation:
- BIOS settings:
- Set your BIOS to its default settings
- Execute Disable bit/XD: Enabled
- Limit CPUID Max: Disabled
- Set all cores of the CPU active/enabled
- Virtualization (if exists): Enabled or Disabled, try it
- Hyper-threading: Enabled or Disabled, try it
- HPET (High Precision Event Timer/PCH): Enabled
- USB 3.0: It might be problematic for some computers, if so try "Disabled"
- Set all the Overclock/Performance/Turbo etc. values to Auto
- Enable or Disable UEFI boot (if exists)
Starting the Process:
- Booting iATKOS Y USB (Starting your computer with iATKOS Y USB installer):
iATKOS Y USB has no options to start your real Mac with. Just boot with it.
iATKOS Y USB has 3 options to start your PC with:
- Booting iATKOS Y USB in UEFI mode with Clover UEFI
- Booting iATKOS Y USB Legacy with Clover
- Booting iATKOS Y USB Legacy with Chameleon
>> To boot iATKOS Y USB in UEFI mode on your UEFI compatible computer, turn UEFI on by your bios.
Note that not all of the UEFI computers have success booting with Clover UEFI. As most of the Desktop UEFI computers run good as we tested, laptop UEFI computers have less chance with Clover UEFI, so they may have to boot non-EFI (Legacy).
>> For Non-UEFI computers > You can boot iATKOS Y USB in legacy mode like any other USB bootable media.
Many of the computers work good with Clover Legacy but some older computers may work better with Chameleon. So try it.
This release is prepared to support wider range of computers by its hybrid structure including these bootloaders.
1- Plug the iATKOS Y USB to your USB2 or Intel USB3 port (Non-Intel USB3 ports will fail at this step)
2- Power on your computer and press one of these keys to enter bios boot menu >> F12/F10/F8/F2 <<
(F12 for Asus boards, F10 for Gigabytes, F8 or F2 for many laptops etc., so find yours..)
3- Select your iATKOS Y USB device as boot device. If you enabled UEFI by your bios, then you can choose the UEFI USB boot.
4- If you booted with UEFI then you will see the Clover UEFI boot screen.
5- If you booted Legacy, then you will see the Legacy bootloader selection menu. Select Clover or Chameleon and hit enter.
>> Most OSX86 compatible computers will be able to boot iATKOS Y USB media by default (without entering commands), but some computers will need some boot flag(s)/command(s) and some options to be changed.
Options for Clover Legacy/UEFI:
There are dozens of clover options. If the boot process fails and you are stuck in the famous "Grey Apple Screen", play with Clover Options Menu. Start with unchecking/checking the Dropping ACPI Tables, DSDT Fix options.
Verbose mode is important for diagnostic output. You need to add "-v" (without quotes) for verbose mode to Boot Args in Clover Options Menu.
Safe mode might be needed for some conditions. You need to add "-x" (without quotes) for safe mode to Boot Args in Clover Options Menu.
Put a space between them when adding multiple commands, ie. "-v -x cpus=1" (without quotes).
You may need to select Kernel Lapic patch under Binaries patching menu for some of the HP laptop computers.
You need to select Haswell-E option under Binaries patching menu for 2011-v3 socket CPU computers / X99 chipset computers.
You may need to add "cpus=1" to Boot Args for some 2011-v3 cpus/motherboards. If so, TSC Sync package under CPU patches should be selected during install by the customization menu.
Most of the computers will boot successfully if you dig Clover options a bit. If not, then restart with iATKOS Y USB in Legacy mode and choose Chameleon bootloader.
Options and boot flags/commands for Chameleon:
- Enter without quotes (").
- You can try combinations by adding a space between them, i.e. "-v -x".
"-v" Verbose mode.
"-x" Safe mode.
"UseKernelCache=No" This option ignores kernelcache and loads mkext files which might be needed for some old computers. This command also allows to load the ElliottRTC patch which might be needed for old computers.
"npci=0x3000" Computers that freeze on "[ PCI Configuration Begin ]" line may try this command.
>> If everything is okay, then you will reach to the graphical user interface (GUI) of iATKOS Y installer where you can prepare/setup your target disk/partition and install the operating system.
>> If everything is not okay, then see the iATKOS Y Known Issues/Solutions page firstly.
- Preparing a Target for installation:
- A target partition or disk will be needed for installation.
- If you are not an advanced user, I advice you to use a clean harddisk with no personal data/OS as for target and unplug all the other harddisk drives connected to your motherboard just to be safe.
- If you are not an advanced user and if your target disk includes personal data and/or any OS, I advice you to backup your data before anything.
Disk Utility should be used at first place for partitioning and such operations for preparing a target. Some other methods might be needed for multi-boot operations, you can read the related section below.
- Start Disk Utility and create your target.
-Select your target disk
-Create new partition table or modify the existing one as you need
-Select HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) file system for your target system partition
- Partition Type: You may choose GPT (Guid Partition Table) or MBR (Master Boot Record) for your target harddisk via partitioning options.
>> Guid Partition Table should be selected for UEFI boot. <<
>> If you need to change your existing partition table type, note that all your existing data on target disk will be gone. <<
- After you create a target volume for installation you can close Disk Utility.
The main screen will be back, you can click to Install iATKOS Y to continue with clean installation.
Clean Installation:
1- Select the destination volume that you have created for installation
2- Click Customize* button and select what you need to
3- Click Install
4- For UEFI Installations, you need to add your boot disk as UEFI device. To do this, restart your computer with iATKOS Y USB in UEFI mode one more time after installation of iATKOS Y. Select Clover Boot Options and Select Add UEFI Device.
Restart your computer and unplug iATKOS Y USB device. You can now select your UEFI installation by your BIOS boot menu and set it as default boot device by your BIOS setup.
* Customize:
- There is already a basic default profile chosen and adding 2 or 3 packages to default profile will probably be enough for most of the target computers.
- You may have to try plenty of times to find the best configuration for your computer.
- Please read the descriptions of the packages carefully.
- Note that this installer may not include all the necessary drivers required by your setup. Additional steps may be needed to be taken by the user to setup and use such components.
Software RAID:
- Software RAID combines two or more physical harddisks or their partitions (RAID slices) into a single logical unit. RAID's various designs involve two key design goals: increase data reliability and/or increase input/output performance.
- You can create RAID volumes and install Mavericks on RAID using iATKOS Y.
- RAID levels or types for OS X:
Striped RAID (RAID-0): A RAID-0 set splits data evenly across multiple disks with no parity information for redundancy. RAID0 is normally used to increase performance for both read and write. It can also be used as a way to create a small number of large virtual disks out of a large number of small physical ones. Simply it is a way to use the disks like using the dual or more channel RAMs, so it increases the read and write performance more than a bit. RAID0 sets are advised for the main system volumes to increase the performance of the OS.
Mirrored RAID (RAID-1): A RAID-1 set creates an exact copy of a set of data on two or more disks. This is mostly for data safety and also an increase of performance for read operations is expected. The RAID array can only be as big as the smallest member of the slices. RAID1 sets are used for security and advised for data storage volumes.
Concatenated Disk set: Which is not exactly a RAID level. The slices are merely concatenated together, end to beginning, so they appear to be a single large disk. It provides no data redundancy. This may be thought of as the inverse of partitioning. Whereas partitioning takes one physical drive and creates two or many more logical volumes, concatenation uses two or more slices to create one logical volume. No increase in performance is possible and neither increased data reliability is possible.
- Boot helper partition: OS X Software RAID systems boot using boot helper partitions and so the bootloader will be installed to boot helper partition instead of the RAID slice. If one of the RAID slices of your target RAID volume is disk0s2, then its hidden boot helper partition named as "Boot OS X" is disk0s3. Do the math for the others. iATKOS Y will do this installation automatically.
- Create RAID volumes: You can easily create RAID volumes using OS X Disk Utility. Do the partitioning if you need to, click on the target disk and then click on RAID tab, choose RAID type, name it and by pressing "+" create a new RAID set. Add the target partitions or disks to RAID set by dragging them and when you are done, click to "Create" button. The added partitions or disks will be the slices of your RAID set, in a few seconds your RAID volume will be mounted and ready for installation.
- iATKOS Y RAID operations:
- For RAID target, iATKOS Y installs the selected bootloader to the boot helper partition of the preceding disk of the RAID set, so the first disk by your bios will be the Mac OS X boot disk.
You can install any foreign bootloaders to other harddisks of your RAID set, there will be no harm for your RAID set. On my test 3x RAID0 system, second HDD has Grub bootloader and the third one has Windows bootloader, all of them are installed seperately and running fine.
RAID Install Steps:
1- Create RAID volume as described above
2- Select it as destination for install
3- Click Customize and select what you need
4- Click Install
5- For UEFI Installations, you need to add your boot disk as UEFI device. To do this, restart your computer with iATKOS Y USB in UEFI mode one more time after installation of iATKOS Y. Select Clover Boot Options menu located under the Boot Volume icons and Select "Add UEFI Device" which the target device should be your boot disk.
Restart your computer and unplug iATKOS Y USB device. Then you can boot your computer in UEFI mode from your target boot disk.
Main System Updates:
Using software updater to apply main system updates is easier with iATKOS Y for most computers.
Some drivers and patches will be overwritten and some will be non-functional, so computers that need these drivers and patches will need to take some actions after updating. These packages are:
- Disable Intel drivers: You will need to erase new Intel GPU drivers coming with the update
- Disable nVidia drivers: You will need to erase new nvidia drivers coming with the update.
- Disable ATI drivers: You will need to erase new ATI drivers coming with the update.
- HD 3000/4000: Intel 7 chipset motherboards (77/75) with HD 3000 and Intel 6 chipset motherboards (61/65/67/68) with HD 4000, do not apply Main System Updates.
Every main system update that had some issues with our PC hardwares mostly covered after the release of the update. Therefore, updating like real Macs is not a thing that you can always count on. We can never know what Apple will do for the next update. Until now it had no major problems with most of the PC hardwares.
iATKOS Y has some automated procedures for multi-booting but still, preparing a multi-boot system requires some knowledge and experience.
Here is a "How To" for creating a dual boot system using iATKOS Y (Mac OS X 10.10.1) and Windows 8.1 Legacy/UEFI:
Clean Disk:
Legacy dual boot - GPT/MBR:
- Create 2 or more partitions by using iATKOS Y Disk Utility. Mac OS Extended Journaled (HFS+) format for OS X target and an MS-DOS (Fat32) for the Windows. Windows target should be one of the first 3 partitions.
- Boot Windows 8.1 Media and install it to its FAT32 target
- Boot iATKOS Y and install to target as usual (Use Chameleon bootloader for old computers (Core2Duo, Core2Quad etc.))
- You have Legacy dual-boot with OS X and Windows
UEFI dual boot - GPT:
- Boot Windows 8.1 in UEFI mode, do the partitioning and install to your target partition as usual
- Install Paragon Partition Editor software to your Windows 8.1 system and create an HFS+ partition at least 15 GB in size
- Boot iATKOS Y USB in UEFI mode and install to HFS+ target that you created in Windows
- Boot iATKOS Y USB in UEFI mode one more time and add UEFI boot device
- You have UEFI dual-boot with OS X and Windows
Windows Pre-Installed Disk:
(Installing iATKOS Y on your disk by keeping your Windows installation)
Legacy/UEFI dual boot:
- Install Paragon Partition Editor software to your existing Windows Legacy/UEFI system and create an HFS+ partition at least 15 GB in size
- Boot iATKOS Y USB in Legacy/UEFI mode and install to HFS+ target that you created in Windows
- For UEFI Windows systems: Boot iATKOS Y USB in UEFI mode one more time and add UEFI boot device. Ignore this step for Legacy installations.
- For Legacy Windows systems: Use Chameleon bootloader for old computers (Core2Duo, Core2Quad etc.)
- You have dual-boot with OS X and your Pre-Installed Windows
>> When you need to use Paragon Partition Editor software on Windows to create HFS+ partition, you will not be able to erase the partition and re-partition the disk with OS X Disk Utility. When needed, you will have to use Paragon to erase the partition and/or edit the partition table.

Boot from GParted Live CD and execute "sudo gptsync /dev/sdX" command on terminal without quotes (X is the BSD letter. Open the partition manager and you can easily see the BSD letter of your target disk).
Simple Troubleshooting guide:
At times after installation, your system may not work properly as in > it may restart, not boot at all or hang at a certain point. These are quite normal and there are some steps to be taken in these cases. It varies from one case to another. This basic troubleshooting guide may help you to solve most of the common problems.
- If you're facing hangs, freezes or kernel panics (which is present as a shutdown symbol on the grey screen just after boot) press space and select Verbose boot for Clover, enter "-v" (without quotes) on Chameleon boot screen and boot with it. This would give you verbose output which is useful for the solution.
You can take a photo of the verbose screen at the point of freeze and post it on our forum to get help.
- To pass the freeze/hang or kernel panic, you may try boot with "-x -v" (without quotes) which boots the computer in safe mode. Then you may have the chance to reach up to OS X GUI to solve your problem.
- White, black or blue screen freezes mostly mean that your graphics card(s) isn't functioning correctly at that time.
You can try to boot with "-x -v" command which mostly to takes you successfully to OS X GUI in safe mode. Then you can search the internet for the solution for your graphics hardware.
Re-installing iATKOS Y by re-arranging your install selection list should be the first choice for newbies.
You may try with selecting none of the graphics related packages or the appropriate graphics disabler packages for your setup under "Graphics drivers" section during install to make sure that it is a graphics related issue.
Then after a little more reading and search (if needed), you can install iATKOS Y with the right settings for your computer and solve the problem.
