ATI announces the RADEON™ Mac Edition boards -- the fastest, most feature-packed retail upgrades for Apple's Macintosh systems

Features ATI's new RADEON GPU with the CHARISMA ENGINE™, the first transform & lighting (T&L) technology for Macs
32MB of high performance DDR memory
ATI's leading TV-out technology brings the best in big screen gaming
AGP and PCI versions ship starting in September, 2000
Toronto, Canada, July 19, 2000 - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT) today announced the RADEON™ Mac Edition graphics add-in board. The first Mac board to feature 32MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) memory, the RADEON Mac Edition with HYPER-Z™ technology will provide gaming enthusiasts and content developers with the most advanced 3D graphics processing on the market.

The heart of the RADEON Mac Edition, the CHARISMA ENGINE™, provides the fastest hardware Transform, Lighting and Clipping engine ever developed and the only T&L rendering engine in the Mac space. Transform, lighting and clipping processing, which controls changing shapes, lighting and maintaining images within a frame, was formerly done by the CPU. ATI's T&L technology off-loads this task from the CPU, maintaining fast game performance even when displaying high-polygon 3D characters and detailed scenes.

"ATI has always led the Mac graphics add-in board market and the RADEON Mac Edition confirms this leadership," said Jewelle Schiedel-Webb, director of the visual products group at ATI. "This board is by far the most advanced of its type for the Mac platform and will transform the Mac into both a gamer's dream and the content developer's strongest ally."

Fastest 32-bit high resolution performer for the Mac
RADEON Mac Edition not only provides the best acceleration for today's games and other 3D applications such as CAD and animation, but is also ready for the games about to be launched for the end-of-year holiday season. These games will require advanced features including T&L, three-texture rendering and HYPER-Z to fully enjoy the benefits, scenery and action of these new titles.

HYPER-Z technology eases memory bandwidth problems
ATI's HYPER-Z technology decreases the amount of information sent to the frame buffer, easing memory bandwidth limitations and allowing for ultra-high resolutions, full screen 3D acceleration in true color. Along with this ATI unique technology, RADEON Mac Edition is the first card for Mac to use DDR memory to maximize performance.

The ability of the RADEON chip to support three texture units ensures that the RADEON Mac Edition will provide ultra-high resolution true color acceleration without sacrificing performance. The only card on the market to support three texture units, this technique increases performance, as rendering multiple textures in several passes, as competing cards do, becomes unnecessary.

"The ATI RADEON is a feature superset of all other existing cards. It brings together features present in other cards, like DOT3 blending, geometry acceleration, dependent texture reads, and fragment anti-aliasing, and introduces new features like 3D textures, a third texture unit, additional internal accuracy, and sophisticated vertex blending operations," said John Carmack, co-founder, owner and lead programmer of id Software. "Many of these features go beyond just making existing things faster, and introduce brand new capabilities that just weren't possible before."

World's finest TV-out for big screen gaming, presentations
RADEON Mac Edition also features ATI's RAGE THEATER™ chip, with S-video and Composite video support for the best display on a conventional TV set. Games, animations and architectural renderings can be displayed on large screen TVs for the most exciting gameplay and impactful presentations.

In addition to TV-out, RADEON Mac Edition also supports more types of displays than any competing product, support which includes Apple, VGA and DVI for digital flat panels.

ATI's leadership in video acceleration on the Mac provides full-screen playback of QuickTime and MPEG-1 video through the RADEON GPU's four-tap filtering architecture. Video images are displayed with full frame rates and characters move realistically, without the jerkiness of competing video technologies.

RADEON Mac Edition loaded with features
With support for the OpenGL® API, RADEON Mac Edition's features include twin cache architecture, superscalar rendering, specular highlights, perspectively correct texture mapping, spherical, dual paraboloid and cubic environment mapping, fog effects, texture lighting, video textures, reflections, shadows, spotlights, LOD biasing and texture morphing.

Pricing and Availability
The RADEON Mac Edition, AGP version, will ship in September, 2000, with the RADEON Mac Edition PCI following shortly after. Estimated street price for the RADEON Mac Edition will be $ 279.00
