Been doing this for years to backup Windows systems or to deploy preconfigured WinXP/7/10 masters.

Works best with a customized PE environnement to boot from (CD-R or USB), and then run Ghost11:
I used BartPE a lot for Win9x/XP/7x64: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BartPE
Then AOMEI Backupper PE iso for Win10+: https://www.ubackup.com/pe-builder.html

You even can edit *.gho images content offline with Ghost Explorer.
And store/restore *.gho images/partitions from a network share, provided your system's network chip is recognized by the WinPE environment, with Ghost Server.
