The Matrox Impression video card, built on the MGA IS-Athena R1 chip, was introduced in early 1994 and became the first integrated 2D / 3D accelerator on the market. Impression replaced Matrox Ultima (IS-Atlas chip) and could perform the basic functions of 3D acceleration. Basically Impression was used in CAD-packages.

External RAMDAC Cirrus Logic PX2085 worked with a frequency of 135 MHz, which provided support for a resolution of 1280 × 1024 pixels in the display mode of 65536 colors or 1024 × 768 pixels with a full 24-bit color gamut.

 



 

But the real innovation of Impression was the appearance in the chip of the built-in 3D acceleration engine. Although texture support was not yet available, it already had Guro shading, Z-buffering, and double buffering technologies that were previously only available to users of CAD packages. The MGA IS-Athena chip supported the AutoDesk HOOPS and VESA VAGI 3-D libraries, and drivers for OS / 2, NT and DynaView CAD could be found on the complete disk with the video card. Of course, hardware acceleration of moving and zooming in OS window mode was also supported. However, due to lack of technology, the game performance of Impression in DOS was not high.

This modification of Impression is made by Compaq (model Compaq QVision 2000+) and equipped with 2 MB multi-port video memory Toshiba TC528257J with a sampling time of 70 ns and a frequency of 50 MHz.
